  • Was this my technician's fault?

I manage a small town computer store and had an incident occur a couple of days ago. I'm partially venting, and partially wondering how much of this, if any, is our fault.

Wednesday-ish last week my head technician goes to a client's office because of an infected computer. She walks in, asks the owner of the business whose computer is infected, and goes over to talk to that person.

This isn't a huge office, the building is maybe a hundred feet long. The middle portion is around 50 feet in length and relatively wide open with a few desks.

My technician, J, talks to the user of the infected computer, let's call her Kay, as well as a woman who is basically the 3rd in charge, we'll call her Jane. Informs Kay that a virus has put porn on her system and it needs to come back to the shop to get repaired. Jane makes a joke to the effect of: "Are you going to be able to stay away from the porn until this gets fixed?" Kay laughs.

We fix the computer and return it a couple of days later.

Sunday morning my other technician, G, is cleaning up the store right before it opens. The irate husband of Kay comes up to the door and starts knocking on it and yelling. G lets him in. Kay's husband informs G who he is and blows a gasket. Claims that J was "walking up and down the aisle, informing people that his wife had porn on her computer", the wife is now mortified and he's demanding an apology to his wife and he's going to get the owner of the company to not use our services any longer. G calms him down, tells him J will call his wife Tuesday. (today) as we're closed Mondays.

I speak to J today. She informs me that she only spoke to Kay and Jane. Certainly did not "march up and down the aisle" informing the entire office there was porn on Kay's computer. (which was a side-effect of the virus, anyway, not something Kay did on purpose) She calls over to the business and speaks to Kay. Reiterates several times that she only spoke to Jane and Kay. (albeit close to the wide-open area I mentioned - although I am not sure how many people, if any, were working there at that time) Kay says to her something to the effect of "it's okay for co-workers to joke about it" - basically saying that it's okay if her co-workers make fun of her but anyone who doesn't work there can't. Which my tech says she didn't do anyway! Kay finally ends the conversation with "Well it's happened and it's done." and hangs up on J.

So J is going to call the owner in a little while to see if things are kosher with him. Naturally, I offered to call him or anyone else for that matter if she needs me to go to bat for her. But she seems to want to handle it herself, and I trust her to be professional.

So the question is: was it J's fault for mentioning the porn in a relatively public environment, even though it was supposedly made clear that it was the virus that put it there and not the user?

Was Kay being the SC because she overreacted?

    Or both?

Days like this, I just want to pack up my things and drive west until I hit ocean.

I don't see anything wrong with what J did... you've got to tell the user what's wrong and why you're taking their machine in for repair. Unless they were talking at insane decibel levels, it was either Kay or Jane that spread this around the office, not J. Sounds to me like someone is trying to cover their ass and blame it on a third party.

That's how I feel - thanks for pepping me up a bit.

It probably could have been handled better... all she needed to do was say that the system was infected and never mention porn. But it's something we tell anyone when it happens. In this case it was the virus/spyware causing the porn to pop up and it wasn't the user doing it.

Unless J whipped out a bullhorn and yelled "KAY HAS PORNOS PORNOS PORNOS ON HER COMPUTER," I don't see what she did wrong.

i don't see the issue either; sounds more like kay being the company gossip and this time it came back to bite her in the ass.

as far as the porn goes, there shouldn't be a problem with it, unless she's 'super religious' or was starring in it.
          look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

I do not think it was very professional of the tech to make a joking reference that the user was going to have to go without porn for a few days.... whether she marched up and down the aisles or not it was still a mistake, and obviously the customer was offended. The tech obvious misread the level of rapport that she had with the customer and was too casual with her.

Best policy is to always act professionally when interacting with customers.

How would you feel if your a plumber/electrician/landscaper/ac guy had made a similar comment to your wife? You may say that YOU don't care but you have to recognize that there ARE people that would be offended by a comment like that made in the presence of their co-workers.

Even though the customer might be overreacting it would not have happened at all if the tech had taken the high road.

As her employer you may want to document the event (write up) and give the tech some guidance about how it could have been handled to avoid the situation. She also would never be sent back to this customer. They get a different tech from now on and had better be on their best behavior at this site.

Unless there's a mistake in the OP, it was the customer's boss who made the joke. Which kinda makes your post irrelevant (although I would agree if it was in fact the tech who made it.)

Anyway, I thought storing porn was the primary function of computers anyway.

Except J (the technician) was not the one to make the comment. Jane (somebody else who works at the office) did.

She didn't. I said the third-in-command at their company, Jane, made the joke.

Good idea, but I'm already taking this course of action. Either I'll head over next time or G will.

I'm still sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak. I'm a bit concerned that the owner of the company might tell us to get stuffed... I'm pretty confident he won't, but until J calls him (she's on a service call at the moment) I'm a little neurotic about potentially losing the business.

From the OP, the tech didn't make hte joke, it was K's coworker/boss Jane who did it.

As was described, I don't see anything wrong with what was done, other than in "Jane"'s behavior. Definitly nothing wrong with your tech in any case.

I'm confused. What does the husband have to do with it? Does he work there too?

She probably told him her 'version' of the incident and it probably had a few embellishments in it (I'm telling you honey he solicited me! I was so scared of the pervert)
