  • Once I lock that door we are closed

I had a customer call tonight 15 minutes before we closed asking if we still had a pair of shoes she put on hold a couple of days ago but never came to buy them. We still had them and the associate in shoes told her that we closed in 15 minutes and we only hold items until closing time.

I walk up to the front at 5 minutes to close to get ready to lock the store and let out the final customers that are going to check out. When it hits that wonderful time to close I lock all four doors and walk to the front end and the phone rings. The lady is in the parking lot and wants us to let her in to buy the shoes. I tell her sorry but I am not allowed to let anybody in the door once I lock it.

She said I locked the store too early. Then she passed the phone to her boyfriend and he says the same thing that I closed the store to early. Again I say sorry but I am not allowed to let anybody in that door after I lock it and I could keep the shoes on hold for them until tomorrow. He says nothing and hangs up. The lady gets out of the car and walks up to the window and reads my name from my badge and then calls the store to confirm that is my name

I guess she wants to call tomorrow and complain that I locked the store at our posted closing time and would not let her in to shop

What Akasa said! I wouldn't be surprised if her complaint consisted of you closing the store 5 minutes early or locking the door in her face or something of the like.

this lady might be like the guy I ran into last week. It's 7:10, we open at 7:30, and I'm waiting for my boss to show up to open the store. This asshat comes to the door, sees our opening times, and then starts ranting at me that apparently we don't understand the rules of retail, specifically the 10 minute rule, which apparently states ALL stores are REQUIRED to open 10 minutes early and close 10 minutes late because that's just GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I pointed out it was 7:12, thus, 18 minutes early so his logic was flawed regardless of whether such rule even existed.

he didn't seem to pleased, and I never did see him in the store after we were finally open...

Actually, Lupo, the store I work in has a posted opening time of 8:00 AM. I have yet to see us open that late. We open religiously at about five minutes to. (And I've never understood why for the life of me.)

At the petrol station, we usually put the cones up at five to closing time, as that gives us plenty of time to serve any customers remaining on the forecourt. This doesn't stop people from banging on the windows, bellowing thru the glass or even driving over the cones to get in.
People who don't like cats were probably mice in an earlier life.

Somebody filed a complaint against my coworker because she "slammed the door in her face after refusing a sale."

            What actually happened?

            We were closed for inventory.

Seeing as I was counting games RIGHT BY THE ENTRANCE, I witnessed my co-worker opening the door a smidgen for the lady banging on it, politely refuse to let the customer in as we were knee-deep in piles of games, counting, drinking soda, sitting on the floor... and gently close and re-lock the door.

Yeah, how nasty of my coworker to DARE close the door, eh?

We had a lot more problems similar to that one that day and so far, one old dude showing up after closing time to buy 200$ worth of 10$ phone cards (yeah right) which we couldn't do seeing as the tills were counted and closed. Walked off pissed off beyond belief "I'll talk to the Manager!!!"

            Yeah, you do that.
Now would be a good time to visit So Very Unofficial!

I love that she has to hand the phone to a man and have him say the same thing that she just said, because he has so much more authority and it's not like he's only saying whatever she tells him to say.

When she put him on the phone I just repeated what I told her. Putting your man on the phone is not going to make me weak in the knees and change my mind

I did leave a note for the manager as I am off the next couple of days cause I am sure the SCs story is going to differ from mine. Probably something like I closed the store 10 minutes early and I yelled and slammed the door in her face. We get strict reminders from our District Loss Prevention Manager to not open the door once we lock it. Several of our stores in another district have been robbed at night by somebody hiding in the stockroom or trying to get in once we lock the doors.

Unfortunately, there are some stores where that does work better. Granted, I've never found that it helps me get the staff to break the rules for me, but that's because I haven't tried that in general. There are some places, though, where the guy gets all the attention. (I've also had the opposite happen. The first florist we were talking to for our wedding had absolutely no customer service skills. It's bad enough to talk only to one of the clients, but when the other one is the one to answer any questions, maybe you're ignoring the wrong person).

The store I used to work at used to always open early aswell. And at closing we would have to walk around and lock all the doors manually, which there were a good 5 sets of. People would try and get back in the store all the time to walk to the other side of the mall. Orrrrr one of our exits was right by the busstop, and in the winter people would make a huge fuss about exiting the building and going outside.

"It's freezing out, you can't kick us outside. That's bad service!"

Ummm, no you're leaving because this door is locking, with you outside of it.
Sorry, my love cannot be bought. And if it could, you obviously don't have enough in your account to do so.
