My store has been hit pretty hard by shoplifters lately. A few grand within the last few weeks I'd say. Our company is too cheap to pay for security cameras/system or even a security guard/team so it's left to the employees.
So when we got a security call last night to electronics we all went flying over there.
It was a big group, about 5 of them. Three men with two women as look-outs. They were regulars, semi-professional, or at least they weren't newbies to the game.
When we all got over there the girls left but two of the men continued to try to distract my coworkers with questions while the third slipped out of the area with 2 mp3 players in his hand.
I quietly followed behind him, watching to see what he would do.
At first he was going to turn down an aisle which is known to be a favorite spot of theirs to either conceal or unload the merchandise. But he spotted me and passed by it while pretending to look at some things.
I called out to him that if he was going to buy the mp3 players he'd have to pay for them in the electronics section.
He replied that he was still looking around and that he'd pay in there later but I wasn't about to follow him around all night long so i cut to the chase.
I reached out and just took them out of his hand and said "unfortunately this product isn't supposed to leave the electronics area. But I'll tell you what, I'll keep them safely behind the counter until you're done. No one else will buy them. Just let me know when you're ready to buy something." And I added a nice cheesy smile.
I turned my back on him and walked the stuff back to electronics and the guy didn't even pretend to continue looking. He followed right behind me and out the exit door.
Felt SO good.
