  • Yes ma'm, you're right, I'm worthless

This happened over a year when I was still a cashier, but it sticks in my memory.
This lady came through my register with her little girl, who was quite cute. I think she was probably 7 or 8. She, being a cute little girl, asked me how I was in her cute little girl voice. I told her that I was good, but a little bit tired because I had been at work all day. Then her mother piped up.
    Me: the lovely Ciarrai
    SCM: Sucky customer mom

SCM: Yes ______, the lady is tired. She has to stand behind a desk and scan people's groceries all day because she can't get a better job. That's why you're going to finish high school and go to a good university so that you never have to work in a store like this lady.
Me: Excuse me ma'am? I graduated high school, and I go to university now. I work here because it gives me enough hours and allows me to pay for school.
SCM: Why didn't you get any scholarships?
Me: Ma'am, I don't believe that that is any of your business.

I handed her the bags, and told her daughter to have a nice day. I was absolutely livid. Where the hell did she get the idea that I couldn't get a better job just because I was a cashier? My blood still boils.

That would irk me off as well. How would all of us manage to do anything if we all had degees and high paying jobs that kept us out of retail. Who would we call to gripe to when we have a problem. I can not stand it when people act like their job is the only important one. Where I work a degree doesn't mean diddly. We have people with good degrees that pack boxes. People should appreciate a person taking a lower paying job so we can all buy our dang crap.

The proper response (which of course would never be allowed) would be to say "Oh, I'm sorry ma'am, we don't cater to your kind. You see, we don't buy self-importance and haughtiness here. We prefer customers with a touch of class and a little logic and humility thrown in. So from now on, you can go and shop somewhere else. You are officially BANNED FOR LIFE. If you EVER set foot in the store again, we'll call the cops and press charges for trespassing. Now get the hell out of here before I lose my temper." *snaps Polaroid*

This story reminded me of this idiot got when I worked Dave Matthews Band. I was in VIP taking passes when this gentleman pulls up and hands me his pass. As I check the pass he says something about me losing sleep just so I can pay for college and be an underling to him in the future. People are sadly twisted and pathetic if they get off to belittling others.

Yes, they are. I have always thought that. Unfortunately, there are an awful lot of sadly twisted and pathetic people out there.

The nerve of this twit!! I am a cashier at a C-store. I graduated from high school. Served 4 yrs in the Air Force on active duty and received an honorable discharge. I am in college now working on a degree in Science. I am far from stupid. I work at a c-store because it is across the street from my apartment and the job is easy. While in school, I need money to pay for bills and I do like to eat.
Working at a C-store is entertaining. We see very DUMB people everyday. By watching how these people behave makes me thankful that my parents taught me class and manners.

That story makes me angry. REALLY angry. I went to college, and you know what? I decided to work retail anyway! Where do people get off? Just because I serve you, doesn't mean you are better than I am! I would have told that woman to bugger off and pack her own goddamn groceries, since I am obviously so worthless and uneducated....(well I would have pretended to say that in my head anyway)

God I hate people like that... Who cares WHAT you do for a living as long as you do SOMETHING so that you can pay your bills and take care of yourself? Grrr....
I've seen some pretty worthless people working "real" desk jobs...I'll take my retail co-workers who have common sense and street smarts over some of the jackasses I've met who are supposedly geniuses. What a rotten lesson to teach your child, too.
I will not shove “it” up my backside. I do not know what “it” is, but in my many years on this earth I have figured out that that particular port hole is best reserved for emergency exit only. -GK

Yes, I'm sure that lady would be singing a much different tune if she had a stroke of bad luck (divorce, job loss, etc.) and had to take one of those "lowly' jobs to pay the bills. How did she pay for college, anyway?! Just because you get scholarships doesn't mean that you have money to buy snacks, clothes, etc., and just have money to spend and save. Why people work where they work is their own damn business!

Well I have my degree, and im paying off my loans so I can go back for my masters....

Customers used to completely change their attitude and tone with me when they learnt I was at university...they used to ask me " so when are you getting your proper job?"

UGH like this job is some kind of play hobby I just do for fun you idiot, this job is 100 itimes more draining than the cushy job im paying out thousands of dollars to get!!

Has she not seen how much college costs these days? I got a half-ride, but even then I had to get loans and work to cover the rest as well as pay rent and fuel, too.

Hello, we have to eat, too, biotch.

Urgh how rude! I can't believe people would say that! It can happen on the plane though:

Rude Pax to Flight Attendant: "I bet you wish you'd worked harder at school so you didn't have to do this job?
Flight Attendant: I bet you wish you'd worker harder at school so you'd be flying in Business Class!

                      And

Pax to child: "Now darling, you must do well at school or you'll end up like this lady here."
Flight Attendant: "I actually have GCSE's, A-Levels and a university degree in biochemistry but I do this job because I love it-it's fun, pays well, I get to travel and meet lovely passengers like yourself!"
                      No longer a flight atttendant!

Me too. I have my degree. I still work retail, because, even though customers are dumbasses, my hours are flexible. I can go full time/part time. Have weekdays off. I can work earlier/later hours so I can be home for my kids. I can ask for certain days off. 8 hours is 8 hours, when I am off, I am off. I get 4 weeks vacation a year, pretty ok benefits, retirement 401k all that. The 9-5, mon-fri workweek is so overrated. And the best part is that I make more than the state employees that come in everyday!
Asshats like that just assume that because you work behind a counter that you make minimum wage, and its ok to treat you like that. They would be quite suprised to learn that journeyman union workers actually do make a pretty decent living.
                        WELCOME

We get this too. Alot of travelers are suited, male business types that are loud, around people they're trying to impress and who like to flaunt their success. And usually when they check in they've downed a few. It's amazing what you hear when arrogance and alcohol combine.

"The graveyard shift eh? Bet you wish you made better career choices."

No, i wish i could cram this fire extinguisher into your intestines.

I get this, too. No one says it aloud, but the attitude is that because of what I do, I must be stupid and uneducated. I have a degree, but haven't been able to find work in my own field. However, I'm proud that I make my own living and that I have learned lots of new skills. I like what I do (well, most of the time) and I'm well-liked.
Even when I was still studying, some people thought of some jobs as "below their standard". You'd think students wouldn't mind some extra money, but apparently not all of them, considering how many times I (and a friend who cleaned office buildings at night) heard people bitching that "I wouldn't do that for any money in the world". After I graduated I worked in a factory for a while. It wasn't a dream job, but it was ok and I had nice collagues and got to work full hours. My former teacher actually phoned me, horrified about what I was doing. I told him I was quite happy with life, thank you, but obviously he wasn't. He told me he had discussed this horrible thing with others as well (so should I be happy that people gossip about my miserable life), and insisted that I find some other job asap. It was not that he offered any help finding a job in my own field, it was just that it wasn't suitable for me to do such work. He didn't pester anyone who was unemployed after graduation, just me. I was so angry after that phone call and I still regret I didn't tell him to go f**k himself and mind his own business.
Back to being stupid service monkey. Funny how the people who treat me like I'm a complete idiot don't know what is a whiteboard, how to use the door (revolving or the regular one), flush the toilet, read, or turn on the pc projector. But maybe in Mount Olympus, you don't need such basic skills because there are slaves who do eveything for you.
