  • When I tell you I can't hear you...

...and you repeat yourself, please raise your voice a little. Repeating yourself in the same inaudible tone of voice as the first time isn't going to be helpful, even if you do repeat yourself three times.

    That is all.

It's even better when they quietly mumble the first two times you ask them to repeat themselves, and then angrily shout at you the third.

They do that because in SC World you didn't hear them because you weren't paying attention, not because they were too quiet. How dare you.

What's best of all is ....

              SC: mumble mumbledy mumble
              You: Excuse me?

              SC: Mumble mumbldy mumble
              You: I'm sorry, I can't hear you.

SC: Well, I can't talk very loud, okay?!

how about when you ask them to speak up. so they do, but only for the next sentence. then they go back to mumble mode.
To err is human, to blame someone else shows good management skills.

One thing to do when you can't hear the person on the other end is to blame the connection.

For those most likely to get all twisted up over being asked to speak up (like you're challenging their manhood or something), it makes the fault something other than themselves.

Of course, you'll still get the idiots who never do a damn thing to make it easier for you to hear them.

                    Speak up dammit!!!

I had a problem where I lost hearing in my right ear for a month (turned out to be a lost ear bud ). People who knew this still would speak to me on my right side. I would point to my ear and say "what?". They would grin and repeat it on my left side.
You may ask how did an earbud get lost for a month in my ear? Three public health doctors didn't see it.

One of my co-irkers (I'll call her Belle) once complained about her cell phone speaker going bad.

Another co-irker (Sheila, for this story) checked it and said that she could hear it fine. Then, knowing what type of person (utterly clueless) Belle was, Sheila suggested that Belle try swapping to her other ear.

Turns out that Belle had managed to get to the point where she had so much wax in her ear, it had pretty much blocked the whole ear canal, and as a result, she'd lost most of her ability to hear on that side.

Not a single person who worked here was at all surprised at that revelation.

Well, except for Belle, that is.
