Being Montana –USA, we have a decent amount of Native Americans in the state. I could care less in the negative aspect, even if I have met some racist ones. The following happened as a guy walked into the hotel who did not have a reservation:
SC: I am not an Indian.
Me: okay…
SC: I am not an Indian (yeah, that’s clear…you look pale what does it matter?)
Me: Okay, well that wouldn’t really matter anyway here. (I assume he figures we don’t rent to Native peoples…)
At this point, he tries to hand me only cash for the room.
Me: You can go ahead and pay cash, but we do need a credit card to hold the room on as well. *friendly smile*
SC: What? Are you saying criminals only check in late?
Me: (I had already been put off due to his “Indian” statement.)…. …. *look at each other* Actually, yes…yes they do. People who are out for trouble often check in late. My father was a cop, a detective even, for 33 years and I am sure he would agree.
SC: Do I look like a criminal? *kinda chuckles*
Me: Well, no but I am fair across the board. Everyone has to have a credit card unless they called ahead and authorized only cash with Management.
SC: Alright *puts away cash, brandishes credit card*
Me: Okay, you can still pay cash if you like, we just put the card on the room with no charges as a security measure.
SC: Oh, just put it on that. It’s alright.
The convo gets rather boring cuz he asks about my father & where he was a cop at, never heard of him of course. Starts rattling off names of people where I am from & I know one but explain to him that their kids were older then I was & went to school with my brothers.
At one point, since he can’t pinpoint who my parents are, I mention they aren’t originally from this state (as in there are no relations):
SC: Oh, well then you don’t count either.
There is this thing in this state that if your parents & previous family were not born here, well you simple aren’t from here even if you were born here.
So, needless to say, no I don’t want to chat up people but it’s my job but this guy was racist and bias from the beginning. Yay….
