  • I saw what you did there.

As my funny victory of the day, I thought I'd share this one. He wasn't really a customer today but I believe he's a regular (hopefully not anymore) at our store.

I was in the office, counting out my register after my first register person got to work for the day so I can go off and do my managerial type things. With me in the office was a coworker who was working on some computer "training" (all common sense type things, but whatever). Because the office is generally 10 degrees F hotter than the rest of the store, the door was propped open since CW was in there anyway.

I had the security camera computer focused on the camera observing the entire front end of the store, roughly 6 registers and the entrance and exit doors.

Now, I'm keeping an eye on the person on register, glancing up every few minutes, etc. I hear the security sensors go off. I immediately look up to see a guy turning around and walking back INTO the store. Curious, I watched the camera as he slowed down next to the "let's tempt you into buying junk food as you're waiting to check out" display. He quite clear as day takes a CD from his jacket pocket and sets it in the candy display and turns to walk back out. As he's passing the sensors (and not setting it off this time) I walk out the office door and stop right in front of him, both of us stopping right in front of the exit doors.

Me: "I saw what you just did."
    Him: "Um, what?"
Me: "I saw what you just did."
    Him: "What did I do...?"
Me: "You took that CD from your pocket and stick it on the display over there after the sensors went off."
Him: "Um.. no.. uh.. that was an empty case I bought over at the pawn shop."
Me: "O..kay.. so you're leaving something in our store that you PAID for somewhere else? That doesn't make sense."
Him: "The CDs are in my car! It's empty."
Me: *stares at, nodding slowly* "Mmhm. Alright, fine." *motions for him to proceed out the doors*
Him: *nervously leaves, looking like he wants to run*
Me: *goes and gets the CD "empty" case from where he stuck it... lo and behold, there are still CDs in there! I go outside, and stand in front of the store, watching him walk to his car and drive off, holding the CDs, making sure he sees me standing there*

I went back in and told the person on register what happened, as well as all the other customers standing there since they were in plain view and had heard most of it anyway, that if she sees him come in again to let me know.

I think I scared the piss out of him. Especially since he was already hesitant to actually steal something when the alarm went off. He soo wanted to run through that parking lot!
    Confirmed altoholic.

Wicked! That was a complete shoplifting fail. I wish my work was more like that.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

Best shoplifting fail ever: the lp person has been following this guy around the store for a while, noticing him picking up all sorts of things. At the exit, she holds the door for him. He thanks her while walking through, and she just laughs and explains that he's now under arrest. (She couldn't actually do anything until he left the store).
