  • I'm not going to feel sorry for you

There was a woman shopping with her friend today. They came up to my register to be checked out.

She had me do a few price checks on some infants clothes she had. It was fairly busy, so I think what happened is I checked the price for an article of clothing, but didn't ring it up, and set it to the side where already scanned things go. Normally if I do this I keep my hand on it, so I know I still have to ring it up.

For some reason I don't remember right now, I didn't keep my hand on it. While I was talking to the lady about something or another, her friend was grabbing and bagging all the scanned merchandise(this is a pet peeve of mine. I hate when customers bag their own things, at least without even asking, because they tend to rip off all the bags and make a huge mess).

Now, as the lady was paying with her card and doing all the stuff she needed to on the card machine, I was looking at the screen that had all her purchases. I noticed nothing on there was the price of one of clothes I checked.

She paid with debit, and when her receipt came out I checked it again, and pulled out the thing I thought wasn't rung up. She insisted I rung it up because I scanned it. I only price checked it. I showed her on the receipt that it wasn't there.

She made it seem like it would be the biggest deal to have me ring it up and to have to slide her card again. I mean it was debit, it's all cash anyway. And she made the comment "Oh that one was the one I liked most too."

Uh..Sorry? What do you want me to say? "Oh, well in that case, if you can't be bothered to slide your card again, I'll just give it to you for free. It'll be fine." ..Nope.

I didn't feel bad at all. I did what I could by offering to ring it up for her to pay for it but she refused. Oh well.

-I don't know if they were actually trying to scam me and steal it or if it was an honest mistake. I'm leaning more towards mistake, but it still seems a little weird to me

I had people throw fits about that kind of thing all the time. Our scanners were old and sometimes if you rang something too close together they would miss it. I bet it was just an honest mistake on her part... but still throwing a fit for something like that is lame.

I'll say it was a crime of opportunity. It was a mistake, but she was taking advantage of it.
To err is human, to blame someone else shows good management skills.

We had a customer at my job come up. They used a coupon from a competitor to buy a bunch of soft drinks at a reduced price. But the cashier typed it in wrong, and the shopper didn't catch it.

The shopper came in the next day, realizing that in essence, he had about eight dollars worth of unpaidfor merchandise. He voluntarily came in and tried to make it right by paying for the merchandise. He even bothered to hunt down and bring in the receipt!

Sometimes a mistake is just a mistake. An SC will try to get away with it. A good person will try to make it right.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

          mom does that too.
she's gotten odd looks from cashiers over it but she feels that taking advantage of a mistake is a sin. plus, in the long run it will only jack prices up.

and she also felt she got her "reward" for being honest. same grocery store she brought accidentally unpaid merchandise from, she won $500 within the year or so.
