  • ...You mean the console?

This has been happening so much lately.

A customer will come in (or call), asking "Do you have the wii game?"

    Me: "What wii game?"

SC: "The wii game!" *various hand motions*

    Me: "You mean the console?"

    SC: "Yeah, that!"

    Me: "Sorry, we're out.."

-It just bothers me so much. There are games for the wii, but the wii itself it not a game.

    The Wii Game?

    Wii Sports / Resort?
    Wii Play?
    Wii Music?
    Wii Fit / Plus?
To right the countless wrongs of our days... We shine this light of true redemption, that this place may become as paradise...Oh, what a wonderful world such would be...

Sorry, my love cannot be bought. And if it could, you obviously don't have enough in your account to do so.

Ah yes, I know the pain all too well. I also tend to get the term "remote" instead of controller, which can cause a conversational train wreck when someone is looking for a remote to play DVDs with.
*jedi hand wave* This game works...just not in your system.

My customers use "DVD" interchangeably with "DVD player".

Customer: I'm looking for a DVD.
          Me: Which title?
Customer: [looks at me as if I'm a blistering idiot] no, a machine for DVDs!
          Me: A DVD player?
Customer: [still looking at me as if I'm clearly the stupidest creature on the planet] Yes!

          *sigh*

Well, right now, I know it's because a lot of people are using their tax refund checks to buy the systems they still don't have... wii's and ps3s mostly. Our store is constantly out.

To be fair for the "I want a remote" part, our system lists the wii controllers as Wiimotes. *facepalm*

I get these a lot though.. "Do you have that wii game?" Which one? Wii fit? "No, the other one." Wii resort? Sports? Sports resort? Beach party holiday blast? (That last one isn't one as far as I know, but it's heading that way, I swear!)

Nintendo got burned rather badly with overstock of the Gamecube. They seem to be producing the Wii on an "as-needed" basis to avoid the problem this time around. Of course, the have need, you have to have a shortage of some sort to prompt manufacture.

If you really want one, try online retailers. You don't have to wait for local shipments, and the folks that sell more tend to get more.

Even with online retailers it can be hard to find one unless you want used from a random seller or willing to pay WAY above retail.

A few weeks ago I lucked out and found one on newegg and ordered it, a day later they were sold out.

Though seeing as they are outselling xbox and playstation they might be having problems manufacturing to meet demand.

Ooooooh my gawd, I got the exact same problem at work.

I once had this conversation on the phone

Customer: Do you have wii games?
Me (caught on awhile back) The Console?
                    Customer: yeah, that machine there.

What is wrong with the word console???

One time I even looked at my mom and said -Mom, repeat after me. Console.

                    Mom: Console?

Me: Okay, if YOU can say it, why can't the rest of your generation?

Or still referring to games as Cassettes. They're CDs now. Been that way since the gamecube and that was in the 90's. (yes yes, playstation, CD-Phillips, Jaguar, Sega CD, etc, I know)

Do I refer to music as 8-tracks, me?

wow. I didn't know there were still problems getting a Wii console. I got one about 4 months after it came out when it was near impossible to find one. I have since sold it though (didn't use it for 6 months straight at one point).

Cassettes? You mean cartridges? That makes me laugh that people still say that. I just booted up the old NES the other day. Took me almost as long to get the game running as it did to beat it!

My point exactly; they won't even use the word Cartridge. Even the english customers will ask for Cassettes.

                          My answer is typically this...

ME: As you can see, I have plenty of Wii games in stock. *gestures to rows of New Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and others* However, the Wii machines (or consoles or systems) are out of stock at the moment.

Oddly enough, we had a few of them in stock for the past two days. I don't expect them to last the weekend, however.

Then there's the fact that retailers cut back on their ordering in general over the last year. Not only are game systems in short supply, but other things like wireless stereo headphones are out of stock in my company.

There seemed to be no significant shortage in my area around the holidays. On Thanksgiving morning, I was reading my newspaper (scanning the ads for Black Friday). I saw a Fred Meyer ad that said they'd be open Thanksgiving morning, and they had Wiis in stock. (I knew to ask for the console, but then again, I do have a functioning brain stem, unlike SCs). To make things even better, they had them for $189. I ran down there, and got one, was in & out in 10 minutes. My friend picked 3 up later that day.
