You'd think that someone who needed help with something would allow the helper to finish what he's doing first, right? Wrong.
In my previous post, I was manning the front register but my main department (if you can call it that) is the photo department. It's not too bad and can get a little busy at times, just like what happened yesterday. We have two photo kiosks, with one positioned at the end of both sides of the photo cave in which I reside. Often times, our senior clientele wants to duplicate old photos and I end up giving them a lesson on how to scan them in. Today was no different, I had two ladies learning how to scan photos on both kiosks and I was keeping them under supervision. At the time, I was also refilling a man's four printer cartridges, I told him it wouldn't take long and he went to go eat somewhere. Seconds later, a very coolcat of a regular shows up and asks if we have any more of this coffee we had on sale. I know for a fact that we don't (got asked about it a lot), so I offered to call another one of our stores to see if they had any, he said yes.
Ok, so now I have a phone to my right ear, a flooded cartridge is spilling ink all over my gloved hands and the machine and I'm giving words of encouragement to the two ladies. I'm pretty tied up at the moment.
Well.....this one lady didn't think so.
She wasn't a regular, not like that makes any difference. She does that fast-like powerwalk to my counter and demands some help.
Her: "Excuse me, sir, can you come help me for just a second. I need to get something down from one of your top shelves."
Me: "I'll be with you in just one minute, ma'am."
I know what you're thinking, call another clerk to help. Well, someone had already called in sick today and the other person was on his lunch break. So believe it or not, the manager was covering the register and I was pinned back here, no one else was available.
Her after waiting a few seconds: "There's no one else here?"
Me: "Unfortunately, not at the moment, our other clerk is on lunch."
Her: *SIGH*
I'm still on hold with the other store, the two ladies are still firing out questions, and I have almost completely cleaned up all of the ink spillage.
Her: "Can you please just help me for one second?"
Me: "Ma'am, I'm almost done here, I will be with you shortly."
Her: "How come every time I come in here, there's no one here!? I always have to hear about you guys being understaffed and shit."
Before I could even answer the question, she lets out a HEY-I-WANT-YOU-TO-HEAR-THIS sigh.
Her: "You know what? Forget this! I'm going somewhere where they actually have people working!" Like I wasn't?
She should have waited. Five seconds later, the store got back to me and the two ladies finished their orders. I did say I was almost done.
Also, if you're wondering why the coffee man I was helping didn't go help the impatient lady, it's because he went off to another aisle in the back so he probably didn't hear her commotion.
