  • Read, It's a four letter word

My company has recently started doing large discounts on select items, often times 50% off, but only 1 day a week. Of course this is advertised in our fliers and on signs in store. For example in the flier "SATURDAY ONLY! <ITEM> ONLY 1.99 (fine print Valid only on <item> on Saturday 3/X/10, regular price 3.99)"

Every day, we get alt least 20-30 people going "buts is on saaaaaaale for 1.99!!!!!"

When we explain/show the SC the ad, and the big red letters saying SATURDAY ONLY or whatever...

SC: How was I supposed to know that.
Employee: It says right here *points to text*
    SC: Buts...It;s not faaaair/Bait and Switch/False Advertising/etc.

We we supposed to have a big sign up all week showing the different specials and the day they occur, but had to take it down because so no one read the whole sign and it turned into a bitch fest/giving in to the SC and giving them the sale price or the item for free on the non sale day.

I hate one day only sales with a passion!

Especially when I hear the false advertising/bait and switch comments

"It's not false advertising. You just don't know how to read."

I wish I could say that on a daily basis.

Our store almost always has vitamins on sale. Buy one get one free.

      Our signs look like this:

      Buy One Get One
      FREE

Of course, many people only read the big bold word and think that's how it is. Most of them admit their mistake upon learning that they need to actually buy the vitamins. However, we get that one who still believes that we are wrong and it's downright infuriating. How is it false advertising when the words "Buy one get one free" were on the sign the entire time?

One time a customer threatened to call our CEO and complain how our store makes false advertisements. I'm pretty sure our CEO has much more pressing matters to address.
In the slot machine of life, I am the WILD symbol.

I sometimes miss things when I read or ads can be confusing, but if i correct me I admit oops I missed that most customers are not this way. At work I realize people never read or INSIST that they way they read it must be correct. Yes sir, Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs are in fact TWO for $1 or regular price each which comes out to .99 for one that doesn't mean you can buy one for $.50 unless we somehow only have one then I will override the price.

Our rewards program prints off a coupon for free drinks and whatnot. Most people claim bait and switch because they never get the free one. Well stop throwing the coupon out or sharing your card with your kid who also buys drinks. and read it once in awhile to see THEY EXPIRE
I'm sorry reading is not a new concept it has been widely taught in our nation for at least the past 100 years. Please, learn to do it CORRECTLY before you become contagious.

I can think of some four-letter words for SC's.
To right the countless wrongs of our days... We shine this light of true redemption, that this place may become as paradise...Oh, what a wonderful world such would be...

I had a lady complain about false advertising after she came to the register with a coat that was over $100, when she had picked it off the rack of $70 coats. If only she'd have seen the sign above that specified the brand of coats that were $70 and noticed that the one she held was a completely different brand, she would have saved herself the trouble. Instead she decided to complain to me to make it seem like she was right. One of the biggest waste of time arguments ever.

Her: "I know it's not your fault, but still, that's false advertising."
Me: No it's not! Some other customer put that coat there."

              And so on.

As to the thread title, all I can think of is the Queen of Wands poster with Kestrel sitting in the beanbag chair, reading porn... with the giant READ on top. And I can't find a link!

                  Our signs look like this:

                  Buy One Get One
                  FREE

Of course, many people only read the big bold word and think that's how it is.
When I worked at the movies, people would get the BOGO tickets and try to use them just... as a ticket. They completely ignored the BUY one, then GET one part. The buy part did not exist in their minds. And our signs/print on our coupons wasn't even typed misleadingly. Everything was the same size and indicative of the same importance in each word. But, as we all know - PEOPLE DON'T READ! Ugh.

Oooh no, they can read. Actually, despite MANY misconceptions about how SCs cannot read, they can actually read really well. However, researchers researching into this "illiterate SCs" phenomenon have noted a few irregularities.

If a customer reads "Free" ANYWHERE on an advert or a coupon, the customers brain literally fries, short-circuiting itself and frying the image of the product and "Free" until it fuses together, forming "the unbreakable bond" where the customer will not listen to "its not free UNLESS" because of the "Unbreakable bond"

Researchers have also noted that, to some SCs, signs that make the SC think of the definitions of the word have also short-circuited their brains. Most notably the part of "understanding". They see a big word on the sign, such as "no", and their brain immediately begins to go up in flames *cue Hindenburg*

Despite the billions of Monopoly dollars that go into this research, no explanation has yet been found. But with your donation (of monopoly money), you can help in the support of more research into this cause. Please donate!

[*](note, this was for comedic effect. Do not take this seriously. Thank you )

I much prefer the "Two for the price of one" advertising style, for that reason among others.

The Finnish equivalent is "Ota 2, maksa 1", literally "Get two, pay for 1". You couldn't get any clearer than that in headline form.

Of course, I also have trouble understanding why they can't just sell single items at half price...
