  • Old and Haggered

We've been having problems with underage gambling and so I've been carding everybody who looks remotely young, and besides we're supposed to card anybody who looks under thirty.

Anyway, I carded this guy, he looked like he was eighteen. Turns out he was the same age as me but just three months older.

    SG: Sucky guy
    SGD: sucky guys (nice) dad

Me: Can I see your ID too please?

SG: I've been getting carded like crazy!

Me: Yeah, looks like you're the same age as me.

SG: I bet you don't get carded as much.

Me: Why do I look old? (I was joking at this point but it still stung)

SG: Nah, just a bit haggard.

SGD: Son, that's a bit rude...

    SG: Shut it, old timer.

What a jerk. I don't know what haggard means exactly but so far as much as I've looked it up online its not a great term.

    SGD: He's just kidding...

At that point I was wondering if maybe the guy was a spoiled brat. I tried to laugh it off like I didn't care. But hell, its never good to be called old and haggard.

SG: Yeah, Im kidding (at this point I wasn't sure)

Me: Ah, you're just saying that cuz I'm giving you money (said with a grin and in a joking manner)

SG: well, its MY money I can take it to another window.

At this point I can't tell if he's kidding but I tried to keep the mood light.

Me: How would you like this? All hundreds?

I tried to change the subject.

Towards the end he asked me something about who is better looking him or his dad. Can we all guess who I said? That's right, his dad cuz his dad wasn't such a jerk.

I know its not extremely sucky but he made me feel kinda bad there for awhile.

He was a jerk. His "jokes" were on par with people who start handing you money before yanking it away at the last second. Ha ha, how funny. I'm glad you took the higher ground.

And haggard? Yes he was trying to insult you. A nicer way would be to say you looked like you'd had a long day.

        SG: Shut it, old timer.

What a douche bag. I don't know what the word means exactly but so far as much as I've looked it up online its not a great term.
        Old timer or douche bag?

"Old timer" isn't really insulting. It just indicates someone who's been around for a long time. Before I left Hasting's, I was an old timer since I had been there for several years.

"Douche bag" is just some asshole that's a waste of space....which that younger guy certainly was. Here's some amusing definitions: http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...m=douche%20bag

Go to urban dictionary and look up the human kite. My man put that one up. But the way he said "old timer" almost condensending. Like it was an insult to be old. Even though the guy was older than me. Go figure. But I think he just thought it was funny to be a jerk to someone who had to be nice no matter what.

Sorry I didn't know what haggard meant exactly. I knew the old timer thing I screwed up where I wrote it lol I was really tired. I meant to say I wasn't sure about the word haggard. My bad

Oh, gotcha. Yeah, haggard is just really tired-looking and worn out.

              What others said, re: haggard.

Actually, one way is to think of how the old king in "The Last Unicorn" looked. He was even named Haggard.

(as mentioned, old doesn't have to be part of it)

I get carded all the time for stuff (mostly because I'm 19 and look slightly younger when not wearing make-up) and don't mind in the least. What's the big deal in getting carded?
And the "old timer" thing, I'll call my parents old and stuff, but completely in a joking manner. That's your dad jerk, the reason you're even here right now.
And, even if you look a little haggard, what's it to him? What a douche.
Just because they serve you, doesn't mean they like you. And just because they smile and act polite doesn't mean they aren't planning to destroy you.
