  • It's an Xbox game, not a lifesaving treatment!

I hate to post another "morons at closing time" thread but a couple of nights ago made me so mad I had to vent.

Problem the first: We close at 9 PM. At 8:55 (yes five freaking minutes before we close) no less than TEN people flooded into the store.

Problem the second: Five of these idiots had been standing around outside for at least FIFTEEN minutes prior to this, why they never thought to come in earlier, I don't know.

Problem the third: Between 9:06 and 9:15 (when we finally got the last people out) there were two morons that got upset at my manager because he wouldn't let them in. Of course they "just wanted one thing" and were devastated when he shot them down.

    Really?

Is a video game really so important that you can't wait until tomorrow? Why the desperate rush?

    There's a 24 hour wal-mart a block away for crying out loud!

This isn't an isolated incident either, I'd estimate once a week we have one or two idiots that get so angry at us for closing at our posted time.

It's because people assume your being there means you must help them no matter what. Closed? Puh-lease. Getting in your car and leaving? Oh, it's just a quick question! Recognize you at another store? You're rude for not helping!

At least you didn't go through what I had to go through. I worked at COMPUSA a very long time ago. Quite a few times we had these morons who would come in 5 minutes before we close. What do they want to buy? A computer! And when you want to buy a computer, you are not going to make a decision in 5 minutes or even 10. No, you're going to take your sweet little time and look carefully at each one.
This affected me because I was the closing cashier numerous times. Our managers would not let us count down our til and start our closing duties until every single customer left the store. So I would wind up waiting 30 minutes, and once for about 45 minutes for these idiots to choose a computer and come to check out.
More time I'm getting paid for? Yeah well, tell that to my body and especially my aching feet after an 8 or 9 hour shift. I WANT TO GO HOME!!!

Let me guess. Management would get pretty pissed if you politely told one of these customers you were closing in 5 minutes and it would be better if they came back tomorrow?

Which would, of course, be the sensible thing to do in such a circumstance.

If I did, I most certainly would've been pulled into the office and written up. I did however complain to the managers about customers who come in 5 minutes before we close and pull this crap, and about the other employees' refusal to let me know when all the customers are gone from the store, leaving me standing up there. And then when I do a quick walk to see if anyone is still inside the store, I get scolded for not staying by my register.
I have however told employees to let customers know that we are closed, and when I did my walks, I would sometimes stare at them for a few seconds, kinda dropping the "I want to go home and I can't until you buy something and leave" look. Does it work? Certainly not! These jerks don't care, they just take their sweet little time!
I know its all about business and making an extra sale, but I think managers should have a little more respect for employees who have worked all day and are tired. I'm sure all of us look forward to the end of our shift so we can go home and get some R and R.

Is the extra labor cost really worth that last minute sale?

Plus keeping all the lights on. Labor from any office staff that had to wait, etc. That was the policy at Nordstrom when I worked there. If there was a customer in the store, we stayed open until they were done.

We close at 9pm m-th. A lot of people will get up to leave at 9...but wait! They have to go to the bathroom! We go around at appropriate times announcing "We are closing in 30 min...we are closing in 5 min." Ugh, go to the bathroom before 9!

And those who start packing up at 9pm.

Oh, and the cafe (not affiliated with the library) who still serve up to 9...and the morons acting all surprised we close at 9...how can they finish their latte? Fuck that cafe, who even was serving when the fire alarm went off on day.
