  • Really? Can I really?

SC: if I change from <OtherCompany> to <MyCompany>, can I keep my number?
Me: You certainly can, as long as the number is in your name.
SC: I can keep my number?
Me: Yes, as long as it's in your name.
SC: so, if I change carriers, I can keep my number?
    Me: Yes, you can.
SC: oh ok good... So, if I change carriers, I can keep my number?
    Me: ... Yes.
SC: I can keep my number?
Me: As ling as the number is in your name, you can take it anywhere you like.
SC: I can definately keep my number?
    Me: YES!
    SC: You're sure?

Do I sound like I'm sure??

    Me: Yes, I am sure.
SC: Ok. Now, just go confirm, if I change carriers, can I keep my number?

Me: No, you can't. (not really, but inwas tempted)

Sounds like a call I had a few days ago.

I don't think you know what you're talking about. I'm the customer and I'm always right, so I demand a new number that will greatly inconvenience my social and professional lives for having to update my contact information with everyone in all of my circles.

oh my word. I do NOT miss that conversation right there. Between working for a cell telco, and working for a 'cable co' that claims to offer phone service, I don't miss it. Especially when LNP was new, people just didn't believe me when I said they could keep their number.

If someone keeps asking for confirmation of the same information over and over, I start trying to diagnose issues with the phone line. Confuses the mental BSOD right out of them.

OK, but what if I wanted to change to carrier Y? Can I keep my number?

Of course you can keep your number, oh, except if you switch to carrier Y, in which case you can keep your number. BUT, if you happen to switch to carrier Y, you can keep your number. That's right, the very same number. Unfortunately sir, you will be keeping the same number as you currently have, and I do apologize for that. Luckily, you get to keep the same number that you have now. Ultimately though, you're going to have to go home at some point, because when you do arrive home with this service, you will be keeping the same number that you do already possess. It will require no further action on your part other than you keeping the number that you have now.

Oh wait, you don't own a phone? You were talking about your blender? ... What? What do you mean, "what's the difference?"
SC: "Are you new or something?"
Me: "Yes. Your planet is very backwards I hope you realize."

I don't mean to be rude and disagree with the OP, but you really should have answered the customer's question. That's really just poor customer service.
