I admit, I'm not a true worker, I get part time jobs, work for friends, et cetera, but this post is about the current part time job I have, Art Modeling. This involves holding still while about twenty students stare at me and draw. ( do it clothed, just FYI...)

There are just a few things that I can't stand...

    1) Just 'cause I'm not moving doesn't mean I can't hear you. I never needed to hear about your sex life, or how you don't like how I look, please don't talk about it in class.

    2) Don't text, please? Yeah, I'm not the teacher, but seriously! It bugs me.

    3) Direct quote from the professor: "Next class we'll have a male model in. Now, male models are easier to draw, see, their muscle structure is more square, with less curves. And well, they're ugly, so you don't have to worry how they'll look in the drawings!" Do you have any idea how hard it is to sit still when he say stuff like that?

Just cos you don't have a steady job, doesn't mean you don't work, and don't get SCs.

Cool! Not cool about the students, but the job.

I got to do that in college; was about the only model they could ever get because people would just up and quit after one sitting. Maybe I was too good, cause the professor had me do all these crazy poses. And he put his foot in his mouth alot, but I just joked and told him I'd have to charge him extra now! Like when he was trying to explain the female shape and stated "now, she may be a little thick around the middle..." (collective gasp from the class, and him going red and starting to splutter apologies)

He hired my dog too; cause he'd get bored fast and go to sleep. And he was blind so he didn't really get distracted.

Easy way to make $15 an hour!

I miss art classes. The human body is tough to draw.

I LOVED my Figure Drawing classes in school! My main prof always made damn sure that the models were treated politely: in fact, we were encouraged to know and remember all the models' names, and if he caught anyone disrespecting a model, that person would NOT be likely to make that mistake again.

Funny thing: one of our favorite models was this 60-ish guy, Carlos. He'd pose mostly nude, with some props to help him hold his position. He was very chatty, and into photography, and we all loved him. He wore big sunglasses the whole time, because his eyes were very sensitive to light.

Then, my senior year, I took Figure Painting with the same prof (omg, AWESOME class), and Carlos happened to be our model for one of the portraiture studies. So we painted him fully clothed, but without the sunglasses. After years of doing things the other way around, it was weird and oddly intimate to see his eyes!

        I loved those classes...

Anybody else familiar with Robert Fulghum's story about the time his class's model was kidnapped?

Her boyfriend ran in wearing a gorilla suit, tossed her her onto his shoulder and ran out.

The arts college I went to briefly for culinary training had a class for other students where they would draw nude models. They hung up these pics in the hallways. It was an interesting first impression for me coming straight out of my exceedingly sheltered conservative background. Then, one day a model walked by on the way to "THE ROOM" I had been warned about during my initial visit. I recognized him from the pictures on the wall. (Kudos to the students for the fact that I could recognize him from their work!) It felt really awkward, though. Kind of thinking "Oh hai...I've seen you naked. Glad you didn't stop to ask me anything." I'd probably not freak out about it now.

That sucks about how rude the students are when you're posing for them. Just because you're not moving doesn't make you less human! Sheesh!

YES! It drove the principal-guy NUTS because he really disliked Fulghum. I got the book around here somewhere (I own most of his books, just finished reading Rituals for the 4th time a couple hours ago).

I took Life Drawing in college too. Shocked the hell out of my mother when she found my portfolio...!
