I'm on a work-study program as a tutor at the college I'm currently taking classes for. I started in the Winter semester this year, and I really like this job. I had a couple of minor SC's yesterday, but I'm saving the 'best' story for last.
No food or drink means NO FOOD OR DRINK!
Just for perspective, we have a tutoring room, and a computer lab where we check in/out students for their use.
A pop was left on the desk leading to the computer lab entrance, which is a big no-no - it can be a firable offense if the head of tutoring came down. One of the tutors spotted it, asked whose it was so she could be heard from both rooms, and when she got no answer, threw it away.
A half-hour later, a student comes out of the lab and peeks at the desk. I'm at the check-in desk facing the lab entrance. Student asks me if there was a pop on the desk. I answered as above, and he got upset, stating as he left "You should have asked..."
First off, there's two huge signs saying that you can't have food or drink in the rooms. Second, I don't feel like being fired from my first real job in over 3 years.
Student ID? Who needs that???
One of the requirements of using the tutoring services or the computer lab is that you have to have a student ID to use them.
A little later in the day, I'm scanning a document in the lab for the supervisor, and another tutor is working with a student in the tutoring room. A couple enters the lab, bypassing the check-in desk. I stop them as they enter the lab...
SM - sucky man
SF - sucky woman
Me - the one and only!
GS - good student, who was on the compute next to me
Me - I'm sorry, did you need to use the computers? I need your student ID to check you in...
SM - (turns to SF) We don't have our ID's...
Me - I need a student ID in order to use the computers. There's some computers for use in the library if you don't. (Note - the student library that's across from the tutoring room only requires your ID to check out material, the computers are open to all there.)
SF - Do they have a printer there?
Me - (Haven't been to the library in forever, there's this invention I use instead called the Internet
) I'm not sure if there is...
GS - There is, but they charge per print.
SM - Is there any way that we can just print something out?
Me - I need student ID, unfortunately. (If we're caught, at least a write-up.)
SF - (as they're walking away) Whatever...
Me - (To GS after they left) Well, that's the second time I've gotten someone upset.
GS - Don't blame yourself - there's signs all over that say you have to have student ID.
And that's true - I counted at least 3. Again, first job in 3 years, don't want to be fired. Besides, who comes into their college, knowing some services need ID, and don't bring it? Oh, yes, I forget - probably the same people who try to buy smokes/alcohol without ID.
And the last...
Overreaction causes firing...
This is from a now former tutor. She's the one who got me into this job, and is excellent as a tutor. She had a lot of students that would only go to her for tutoring, which led to this. I'm paraphrasing a bit from what I remember her telling me.
We were between semesters, and it's an option if you want to work or not. We keep the rooms open mainly for students that don't have a computer to be able to use one for registration, student tuition requests, etc. I worked it, she decided to take a break - reasonable, right?
Not to this student. She came in and asked for now former tutor, and was told that she was not in. Instead of making a time to come in to see the tutor, you know, the rational decision, she decides to cancel all her classes for the next semester and sends a complaint.

Unfortunately, the complaint reached the President, who determined someone had to go. Guess who?
The good news is that the head of the department and the supervisor found grants for her, so she doesn't have to have the job as far as assistance. Still, it was very sucky for her.
Another positive is that I have a full description of the student from her should she happen to stop by - I can choose who I want to tutor...
