  • A Few Things We're Not....

I've noticed patterns of strange behavior from guests at our hotel. A lot of these are not inidividually sucky, but together they make work not as much fun.

    We're Not Baby-Sitters
~Just up the road from us is a Gemoligcal Institute, they offer classes for people going into the jewelry business. We get students of theirs who live with us during the time they're at that school (so from 3-9 months or so.) A good amount of the students staying with us seem to come from over protective families (and are all between 23-30). For instance:

-One of the guests seems to have decided that the time spent away rom his mom and dad means he can really party. Fine with us, he was always out late at night and meeting up with people. But, if he wasn't in his room when his mom called, she would ask us to either find him or report to her what he is up to.

-Another instance is with a girl who is actually very straight-laced. We see her returning back at normal hours, she's never come in drunk and she's generally pretty nice. But, her mom will call every 5 minutes for hours if the phone in the room isn't answered. Everytime she calls back she sounds more and more worried and asks us if something could have happened. This has happened to me three times now.

~Guests who are loading up their cars and leaving sometimes ask us at the front desk to keep an eye on their kids. I'd be fine with that, but the only way for me to get around the front desk to the lobby takes a while to walk. Kids end up running off while playing and I can't be there in time if they run out the front door.

We're not Blind (although sometimes I wish I were)
I understand that when you're a guest at a hotel, you treat it like you're home. I'm glad, that means we're doing our jobs right. But, please please please put on a bra ladies! It's very easy to spot when you don't and I'd REALLY rather get that image off my mind when I am assisting you. Also, if you've been using our pool and you're wearing a speedo, I don't mind you wrapping a pool towel around your waist and taking it to your room. But, every summer I still see waaaaaay more of our guests than I would like to.

    We're not a library OR a restaurant
We offer complimentary breakfast and a business center (two computers with internet and a printer) for some reason, people just love coming in and using both. Even if they aren't guests. I'm not talking about just one or two people either. It's upwards of 7 now that I know of. One of the guests is reall tricky about it too. He will come in talking about wanting to rent a room. He asks to take a look around. We welcome him and give him a description o our property. But, he takes an awfully long time to "look around." We usually end up finding him on the computers, checking his email. At least now we all recognize him.

We're not a medical equipment supplier
Twice now I have had guests check in and ask for a wheelchair. Both times I am sure I looked like an idiot as I stared back at them, completely dumbfounded. To me, if you need a wheelchair and you're traveling, you would bring it with you. Or, at the very least, confirm with the hotel BEFORE your twelve hour drive here. In the one case, everyone at least looked healthy enough to get along without. In the other, I watched in horror as a very old woman shuffled slowly down the hallway with promises of a chair.

    We're not a bank
Most hotels I know of won't take checks, especially without warning and just for a night or two. We also don't do cash advances. I understand that you have a debit card and that I have a card-reading machine, but that doesn't mean we work like an ATM. Trust me, corporate would skin me alive if I started handing out money.

If anyone else has similar stories, please share!
