Here at Malmart we're told to call CSMs to come pick up our extras; to prevent robbery of too much money.

AKA like the other day when someone bought $3000+ worth of moneycards, and paid in cash. When they pull the drawer they then take everything bigger than a 20, and leave you with about 5 20s.

Interesting that some of you aren't allowed to give $50s as change when it would be appropriate. What's the reason for that?
In my case, it's not really that I can't, but that I was trained at some point not to because if it was counterfeit giving it to a customer would be a Bad Thing. (Never mind that if it IS, I'd get talked to for taking a bad bill...but everything I know about spotting counterfeits, I taught myself or got from this site. *sigh*) So in 99% of cases it won't even cross my mind that I have a $50 because it is out of sight beneath my till and I've been trained not to give them out.

IF I remember I have one, the customer also has to be willing to take it. Last time I remembered I had one, the customer did but didn't look happy, but I can just see one wanting to wait for smaller bills instead. And with our store's policies, they get their way.
It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.

Ah, but the 20's are far more likely to be counterfeit, both because more fakes are made of them and because they're common enough that people don't look closely at them.
Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.

I've gotten those that ask if I can break a $50 or a $100, and they aren't buying anything. <Random Craft Store> isn't a bank....no, wait, it's every store known to man combined in one, forgot about that. o.o
We can't even open the registers without a cash transaction (or a MOD or FES key). Even if we could open the drawers without a cash transaction, I wouldn't do change just because I know I'd end up getting messed up. I've had customers misunderstand me when I've explained that no, we don't give change..."oh, I'll just wait til the next cash transaction". Bah. No.

In light of the abundance of $20 bills, why would a $50 "wipe out" a till? Is it so unreasonable to expect that a till might have a pair of $20's and a couple of quarters for my change?
The only time a 50 or a 100 will wipe out my drawer is if it's early and you're one of the first customers. When we start the day, we typically have no 20's in the drawers. And if we do have a 20, it's because we have like 5 1's or something.

After a few customers (and that's even when I'm just running back up, which is more common than me being scheduled as a cashier), a 50 or a 100 isn't going to totally wipe me out. But starting out the day, it will. And it's a pain in the butt.

But, it doesn't bother me anymore. I know it's more frustrating when you're working somewhere with only one register and you're the only one manning the store.
you are = you're. not "your".

I just paid a bill with a €50 note today.

BUT: it was a €25 taxi fare. I used the change to pay for the return trip.

Yay, I get to go trough the expenses reimbursement procedure at the office tomorrow...

At the Gaming Store. We had no drop box. Everything was kept in the drawer. So if someone paid with a $100 we'd give them the large bills, if we had them.
Same here, although the regulars knew to pay for huge purchases with plastic. The bank was practically around the corner, but being the only one in the store most times I wasn't allowed to close for 5 minutes while I ran to make a deposit. There was a locked bank bag in the office but we weren't allowed to use it (some of us suspected that owner had forgotten the combination and/or lost the key).

also there are parking meters out front. eeeeeeveryone wants quarters. $1 is fine by me, otherwise bring your own
Our store is next to (or 2-3 doors from) a LAUNDROMAT. Know you're gonna do laundry? GO TO THE BANK FOR QUARTERS! ROLLS of quarters cost the store MONEY for the bank to deliver them to us!

So I was just guilty of this. I had a horrible craving for TimBits and only a $20. (quarters and loonies go to laundry, and I didn't happen to have any toonies. I didn't have enough in nickels and dimes, and I get the impression that paying for a purchase over a dollar in small change is acceptable only at the engineering C&D). After she gave me change, the cashier told someone that she was out of fives and tens.

Of course I felt less guilty when I saw fifties being taken out of the till. (No, I wasn't trying to look).

I'm old school about paying for small purchases in cash; it somehow feels wrong to put sub-$10 purchases or lunch at McD's on a card. (I know it's normal now, but when I was a kid, putting a $5 purchase on a card meant you were broke, and for some reason I can't shake that.) So I carry cash, and because I don't make it to the bank that often, I'll take out $300 or so when I'm there. So as not to have a bulging wallet full of $20s, I usually ask for some $50s. I try to avoid using them for small purchases, but sometimes it just works out that it's all I have left.

In that situation, I'll ask the cashier if a $50 is okay, or if they'd prefer me to use a card. Almost always they are fine with the $50.

I had a guy on Saturday who wanted to buy an $8 game and pay with a $100, dispite the fact that he had plenty of smaller bills. When I asked him if he wanted to pay with one of his $10's he got all pissy and demanded to know why wouldn't let him pay, I told him I didn't have enough change for a bill that big that early in the day. He finaly paid with the $10.

Thankfully, we start with rather large tills - $400 for cashier drawers, $500 for service desk drawers.

However, at most, we start with $100 in 20's, the rest is split up. If I get tossed on express at the start of my shift, I always wind up getting several big bills and/or cash back transactions back to back. It always sucks when you have plenty of $50's and $100's, but only $5's and $1's and loose change for everything else.

And when someone keys in $100 cash back for debit (yes, we allow that much, grr), and I warn them "It's going to either be a $100 or a bunch of $5's and $1's", they still go through with it and ask me for 20's after the drawer pops open... after I just told them I don't have ANYTHING but small bills and big bills.... usually they'll opt for the big bills, but someone actually did opt for the tiny bills and I had to shut down my register until I could get more change (they even took rolls of quarters instead of big bills, wtf?).

edit: If I do hand someone a big bill ($50 or $100) back, I show them a few quick ways to make sure it's real. Watermark, plastic strip in the bill, counterfeit pen. That way at least I have some defense if someone claims I gave them a bad bill. And we did get nailed by a bad $50 about a week ago.. made it through the cashier, and through cashup - the bank caught it. Since it made it past cashup, there's no record of who took it, so the cashup person that worked that day (who happens to also work in HR).. got nailed with a writeup. It's gotta be really awkward writing up someone that's above you and works in HR....

This would be to avoid being the person who pays with a $100 bill. Their logic actually works. Mostly. It's that one little hole that's the big problem.

They could also want the rolls of quarters for parking meters, my mom keeps one in the glovebox for just this reason. But she gets them from the bank.
