I had a customer approach me ask if a specific item was on sale. I know it was not. I double check and determine it was not and tell SC.

SC: So I get it for free, right?
Me: No. Only if it scans for the wrong price you get 1 for free and the rest at the correct price.
SC: But it was the incorrect price.
Me: It was not on sale, and *scans it* and it is the correct price.
SC: I want a manager.

I page MOD, and they arrive.

MOD: How can I help you?
SC: Your employee is not giving me a item for free.
MOD: Did it scan wrong?
SC: Yes!
MOD: Do you have the receipt?
SC: I never bought it.
MOD: Then then my employee it correct. You only get it for free if it scan wrong in a sale transaction.
SC: What you name.

MOD gives name and the SC walks about 20-30 feet away. A minute later our service desk clerk pages MOD with a call on hold.

MOD: Hello this is <name> how can I help you? <pause> Ok. <pause> I can see you standing 15 feet away from me by the paper towels. <pause> I can hear you. <pause> Bye.

MOD hangs up the phone, trying not to laugh. I go in back and break out laughing. MOD quickly goes and hides in their office.

It's the law in many places, in PA it's items up to $10 you get the first one free, and the rest at the price marked on the shelf, and over $10 you get $10 taken off the price marked on the shelf, and the rest for that price. There are a couple of exceptions to the "get one free" part, milk being the only one I remember, I think it's because the price of milk changes so frequently.

I think the law to prevent sheisty stores from marking an item lower than it is in the system, and hoping people don't notice. If they have to give one away free every time someone notices, it suddenly becomes a lot less profitable.

Ever had a SC actually find a item and get the wrong price, them after they pay quickly try to get another for free? It is also extremely funny if we correct the price by then and the get pissy and walk off leaving the item behind.
