Well if the Mathies would ever get rid of the Black Hole that is 6th Floor MC, then maybe the roads would straighten out again.
It's the seventh floor that's scary... (Actually that and the fourth floor. Especially if you're old enough that that's where the library used to be).

Easy to follow, easy to see, easy to remember, and most of those pubs have been there longer than you or I
Sadly, they're declining fast. Most local pubs have either closed or are doing badly. It's all nightclubs and bistros these days.

Now, apparantly, you need to have the exact address to your own ass to be sure you get to the right one.

I'd probably be the person asking for the address rather than directions. I have an aweful sense of direction and before gps I couldn't go anywhere. Mapquest and directions are only good to a point. As soon as I miss a street it's over. Also, I feel too distracted from my driving if I'm looking for street names and such. I feel much more secure with an address over directions, but that's just me. Last time I got directions my friends started with directions for walking back out to the garage. Yeah, my sense of direction isn't that bad, but it's close.

First, there are several streets around here that mapquest, gps systems, etc. continue to treat as connected, when in fact, "you can't get there from here". Also, when giving directions to my own house, I'm more likely than any system to tell you which end of the street to come in from based on ease of turning into my driveway, or avoiding where the kids play in the street, etc. I can also tell you that when you turn on street "x" it'l be right beside a pink chinese restaurant, otherwise even with a gps you'll have a hard time telling that tucked back in street from several wide drives into businesses.
I have the same problem. Neither MapQuest or Google Maps knows that Coors turns into Corrales at Alameda. So if I'm using to find some place from my place, it sends me around the block. Same for trying to get here.

Plus, once you get on my street you need to have specific instructions to find my apartment because of the way my complex is set up. It's kind of two complexes in one, Riverwalk and La Paz, and the number system is duplicated. Which means if you don't have specific instructions, you're going to wind up at Apt. 913 at 3505 Blah St, instead of 3405 Blah St. And on top of it, on my end, we share an entrance with the Camino Real Apts next door.

          Good times.

Having directions from the person at that address, in addition to your gps, isn't going to hurt, and could help. Personally, most of the people I've encountered, I swear only turn down directions because it gives them a chance to tell someone they have a gps
I know exactly what you mean, I can't tell you how often I've gotten to where my GPS says I should be and there's nothing remotely close to what I'm expecting to be there... good to have had someone tell me where to go when the GPS thought I was done
Also for coming to where I live, I'd love to hear the GPS that can give direction like "The road is easy to miss, it's right after the 7-11" and "each building has two addresses, make sure you are on (my side) of the building"

Me too. Grew up in a town in Texas that was surrounded by cotton fields on all sides, not endless city like here in Utah. "Go 3 fields thattaway and turn left at the cow" is far more useful in those situations than "turn left at FM2011, then right at FM1058", especially when the FM (Farm-Market roads, common in West Texas as a way to get from your farm to town, and back again.) roads aren't marked in any way other than a dirt road leading perpendicular to the dirt road you're already on.

Some news article stated that men are more likely to give directions that include mostly landmarks, whereas women are more likely to give directions that are primarily route names. I've never understood either side, prefering to give directions that include whatever information is most useful to get the person to whom I'm giving them to their destination.

                    I use a combination.

"Take Alameda to 2nd where the Valero station is and turn right. Take 2nd down to Menaul, on the right is a Texaco station, turn left onto Menaul. Go up Menaul to Louisana and turn right at Coronado Center. Turn left at the light one past the Coronado Center sign."

That's how you get to ABQ Uptown from my place.

Sure hope that trend turns, sounds like a great loss to me. Hopefully it's still mostly confined to cities? We did see some of that by the time we left the UK just over 10 years ago, but mostly in more urban areas - country and village pubs were still alive and well - hope that's still so.

Last I heard, we were losing about three per week across the country. I don't know of any geographical 'preferences' in this :/

Just about all GPS systems have a "points of interest" feature where you can look for restaurants, shopping, AIRPORTS.... and it'll plug in the one you choose. wow...

Exactly. I have a really old Garmin that does that. I had to find a restaurant near a courthouse once but forgot the name of the restaurant. (I'll know it if I see it, though) Just plugged in Courthouse, Bugtussle, and it got me right to the spot I needed.

I'd be lost without my GPS. I'm just geographically challenged.

I can get lost walking in a straight line.

                              I have maps of EVERYWHERE.

...maps I am unable to read because the moron that taught me how to read a map did it wrong.

                              I want a GPS.
