I had a classmate that was named Brenda Star because her mother was one of those hippy-dippy types. She despised her middle name and was a metal head with a multi-colored mohawk.

I'm of the opinion that if you have to name something after your favorite geekery, then get a pet or a vehicle and name that.

And don't think you can get away with using a kid's "normal" middle name, because every teacher they ever encounter is going to use their first name and every kid they go to school with will thereby also know it and use it as a source of torment.

I don't know if it is geeky... but I was named after a Diet Pepsi commercial. I am dead serious. Apartment 10 G with Michael J. Fox- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=417Gn8KeEVY

Maybe... If so, oi. Poor Leia and Han. They have the worst life ever. Home planet gets blow up. Your dad is one of the most evil bastards out there. Your brother turns evil (tempoary). Your two sons die. One of your son's goes evil. Your best friend dies. Seriously. The solo family has enough problems to make a epic soap opera.

Oh wait. Now I get it.
        When did Luke turn evil?

And don't forget Han's cousin, who basically fried half a fleet of good guys just because he couldn't keep his damn hands off the super-laser button.

These days, at high school at least, they have the option of providing a preferred name, and that gets given to the teachers. And in elementary school it would only be a problem with the first teacher you had there (unless, I guess, someone was new to the school).

I have never watched Star Wars.

I have already tried to tell the father that his childs name will follow him FOREVER and always, it didn't seem to have any effect. His response? "My girlfriend liked the name"

Thing is, the parents are from here, Peru, so children here have 4 names right off the bat. These parents decided to throw in a 5th name, but this name won't appear on any other documents except his birth certificate. Another irker I have, the childs first name is actually two names in one.

So, we have "Josecarlos Guillermo Anakin <fatherlastname> <motherlastname>"

Poor kid. But I do have a thing for nerdy names. I guess because my name "Katelyn" is way too overused.

He's had a couple of times where he's slipped to the dark side in the post-RotJ novels.

                Slightly nerdy?
Nah. a nerdy reference to any work over fifty years old automatically becomes a *literary* reference, and therefore, "Educated". You're cool ^_^

I'd consider Luke as that's fairly normal. Han...that's not normal but not wierd. Ben...I'd consider....but not Anakin.

But Anakin? Geebus people, no. Bad parents. Bad. -=rolled up newspaper swat=-

                Just don't do it.
These ~_~ I'm sorry, but every damn time I heard them use that kid's "shortened" name in those flicks, my mental typewriter did not see it as "Ani", but rather, as "Annie". >_<

Do yourselves and your kids a favor -- give them "plausible deniability" on their first name, and be creative when it comes to names that are easily abused; middle names are a bit more flexible Wanna know if a name is abusable? Run it by a pack of 4~6th graders and ask them to riff on it... My grandparents failed to do this, and so my Dad's name was Arlen Jude lastname. Very, very few people outside of our family knew of this fact in his lifetime, as he went by "Billy" (nobody knows how he got that nick).

I seem to have a fairly common firstname, tho I get all sorts of misspellings and mispronunciations of the last name. The only one i don't correct people on is when they mispronounce it as Kreuger. I kinda like that one ^_^

I think I'll stick with the rule a friend of mine has for naming children. When considering a name for a child, ask yourself the following question. "Which sounds better when placed before the full name? 'Supreme Court Justice,' or 'Now appearing on center stage?'" If it's the latter, you might want to rethink it.

Yeah, but the problem with that is that a name like Anakin (when you don't consider the likely origin) sounds better as the former.

They could be naming him after Leia and Han's son Anakin Solo, who was a war hero and an excellent person, as well as one of the best Jedi seen during Yuuzhan Vong wars =D
NERD LUFF! That was seriously the best series in the entire saga. I was supremely disappointed in the Legacy series, although Fate of the Jedi is getting better.

It wasn't until a few years before the Special Edition came out in theaters that I finally sat and watched the glory of the Wars.

And speaking of funny names, when I first started dating my husband, he told me he wanted to name a son Calvin Hobbes <lastname>. I'm totally cool with that. I doubt there are many kids left these days who know about Calvin & Hobbes.

Wait a second. I hate Star Wars. I absolutely hate it. Star Wars fans can keep their incestuous storyline, their 'good boy' turned bad, their Virgin Mary ripoff, and their needless soap opera. Give me a good story about Morgan La Faye instead anyday.
