Pay attention to your own WIC check, lady!

Been doing a few WICs like that of late. If there's a more than $3 deficiency in the amount I always make the effort to comment on it, adding things like "You can buy 18 oz. more of cereal" or "You can get more fruit with this" or even "Duhhhhh... numbers are hard."

Of course they don't want to get 1) out of line, 2) more stuff, 3) back in line, 4) any more impatient than they already are.

I think customers think it's easier to blame the cashier for their lack of reading comprehension/ cost estimation skills. Course it's hard to estimate fruits/veggies that get weighed, so I don't give them guff on that. But if I tell you the total, then either accept it, or say something!


If it seems they're TRYING to follow the little what's-allowed pamphlet they get, I'll give them the benefit of doubt. If they come up with the wrong cereal and say, "Well, I ALWAYS get these!" I put on my I-don't-think-so hat.

If you DO always get that cereal that's not approved, then it ain't at our store, sugar!

Yeah, I've tried encouraging the store to report her, and to DO something about it...but they won't. I think they're worried about a lawsuit or something that she might try to pull. Not that she has any legs to stand on...but of course, they're scared about the possibility.
