  • Because Staff Procedures Are Different

I've had variations of this one everywhere I've worked, for some reason SCs think that staff members don't have to follow procedures.

me "I need to check your acount and see what can be done if you'll just hold for a few seconds while I do that"
customer, angrily "yeah, coz I'm only a customer, I bet if you rang your own call centre they wouldn't do anything like that, they'd just let you have an authorisation payment, no bother"

me *thinks* "yeah coz my colleagues like taking part in fraudulent transactions which could get them fired, how would they even know it was me unless they checked the account details?"

me to customer "everyone has to go through the same checking procedure, even mysef, even if I were to ring my own call centre"
    customer "I don't believe you".

When I worked in retail, I used to have customers telling me that staff didn't have to obey the same returns regulations on goods that customers did.I'm afriad they do actually. If they return something and the time limit is up, there isn't some magic rule which is used because they are staff.
Customer "why did you answer the phone if you can't help me?"

Had this douchebag once who claimed he worked for our company, and that entitled him to not have to wait in line to check-in. He created a huge scene in our lobby. CW and I stood our ground, though!

Then he got mad because he said we accused him of lying, which we didn't, though he obviously was lying (we don't have a location in the city he says he works in, he doesn't have any sort of employee discount, he should know that as employees we STILL have to wait in line when we're staying at the same brand, etc etc).

Plus, people who really work for a company in that instance wouldn't behave that way. Sort of the same as claiming to be a lawyer.

Actually, and dishearteningly, we've had examples of people who work for the same company do just that sort of thing on here.

Just tell them "if the company is in the business to make money, I believe that would also include its staff members."

I have not had a customer complain to me that staff members get special treatment. The only special treatment that we get, is that as long as we present our staff discount card, we can get the fuel vouchers that people have to pay $30 to get. However, we are still bound by all the other terms of the staff card AND the fuel voucher program.

Whenever someone tells me that they don't believe me, my response is generally as follows:

"Luckily, it does not require your belief in that particular subject in order to be true. It will occur just fine without it. I don't believe in the sky, but there it is, outside. o.o!"
SC: "Are you new or something?"
Me: "Yes. Your planet is very backwards I hope you realize."

I've had people get mad cause they think we get discounts.

A client once asked if employees got discounts for family or rather she insisted this was true, she then insisted that she was related to one of our girls. So I said yes after her not listening till she got her way, and told her instead of $16 her total would be $19 dollars. She threw a fit and said she was related to the girl again, that's when I pointed out A) she picked a girl who hasn't been with us in over a year (all of our pictures are on our website, it's not up to date) and as I recall this girl has no family in the states besides her husband and child. B) No matter how many times she insisted, not one of our staff gets discounts nor do our family members.

I can get into deep deep trouble for giving discounts, no one gets them except for the owner, and even then no one in her family gets discounts. I'm not going change rates unless I come back with less animals on the contract than originally expected.

Exactly. I don't believe in linear time, but that doesn't mean the customer woke up at the same time he was eating breakf-- actually, no, I just can't make that assumption anymore.

Why do some people think they are so special that because they work at the same store/cafe/bank whatever you do that you MUST surely know that they are to get special treatment? As if by working at the same place you're all buddy buddy??

Met a guy once waiting in line at the pub. Got talking to him with my step mum, not only was he the OWNER of the pub but he PAID for his own drinks and food (as well as shouting us a bottle of wine ). He owned the place and he didn't expect special treatment!

grrr people I hate them so!

I've had a few people ask me if I get my prescriptions free since I work in a pharmacy. One particular incident happened when this lady was coming in to pick up her prescription that was about $250. She commented that she should get a job here then she could get her prescription for free. I told her that we don't get them for free and that we are covered under a typical Blue Cross plan that has deductibles and co-pays just like most other people. She laughed and told me she didn't believe me.

Even if we did get free prescriptions as a benefit, that would be of no use to me since I don't take any. It just amazes me though how people will believe something no matter how outrageous it is.
