  • The line that really p*sses me off

Argh. I work in IT, I'm the guy at the end of the phone.

Most users seem to beleive IT is the realm of benelovent, servitudinal gods, who know all, do all and see all. Ok so SOME of that is true, but like I've told some users, I'm not an electrician, graphic designer or frigging architect.

The line that annoys me the most tho is.. '
"I don't think you can help me...."

And I've had it FOUR FREAKING TIMES today alone.
"On a scale of 1 to banana, whats your favourite colour of the alphabet?"

This happens so often that I can no longer believe they actually think we can't help them at all. I figure they must mean that they assume you'll be unable or unwilling [policy] to help, but that there's a chance so they might as well try anyway, but they don't realize how ambiguous their statement is.

Though maybe that's too much credit.

My "perfect world" repsonse would be:

"Ok, well good luck finding someone who can!" *click*
"If we refund your money, give you a free replacement and shoot the manager, then will you be happy?" - sign seen in a restaurant

I've used a variation on that line in cases where I'm not sure if I'm calling the right person. For example if its an internet problem and I don't know if the issue is the computer or the internet. I would say that, although with an explanation, so the person knows the issue might be something else.

              almost as bad....

the user who thinks you can help
when it turns out the issue isn't something you're in charge of.

"but the computer won't turn on - it's your job to fix it!"
"there's no power to your outlet... call engineering and put in a trouble call."

                    Ah, the power of punctuation!
I shouldn't be laughing about this. Does it make me a horrible person?

No. You're not an evil person.

And remember, say: "You are so right. You are the weakest link. Goodbye."
