  • I can't just take your word for it.

Well, I actually "talked back" to a customer today.

I'm working the smokeshop (the tobacco line for you non-malmart people) when a guy comes through my line, and tries to buy himself some smokes.

TELLS me his birthday. I ask for ID. He gets huffy and I add "Unless you have about 5 grand for my court costs."

I don't know what came over me.

I explain that kind of stuff to people all the time. Almost every day I have someone who wants to buy Sudafed that doesn't have their ID with them. In my state we have to log the name and address of each purchaser as well as how much they bought and when. We need to get photo id for each purchase. If they get huffy with me, I simply state "It is a federal crime for me to sell this to you without checking your id." Sometimes that shuts them up, but sometimes they act like they don't care if I get in trouble.

      Nice one.

In fact, I believe that deserves a little applause.

So, what was his reaction to that?

Good for you! I said something similar to someone the other day - they were wanting to buy some lighters and they were underage, so I refused the sale and some old woman jumped in and said "I'LL buy them for him!" and again I refused so they both started shouting at me. Eventually I lost it and said "FINE, I'll sell them to you if you both agree to pay my fine and my wages until I find another job once they sack me from this one, and YOU *to the old hag* accept that you're gonna face charges for supplying a minor!"

Oddly enough they both shut up then, but yes I agree that customers don't care if we get in trouble, they just want their own way.

my store sold to an underage customer who was part of a sting.

since than we get fired if we fail the sting.

so i check anyone who appears to be under 40(that is what my company wants)

this one girl didnt have her id(she is the one that asked for the cigs) i said no. her friend said i have mine ill buy it again i said no. well she went off about how i am not doing customer service.
i said well i said its not my fault your friend doesnt have her ID. If i wanted to buy cigs i would make sure i had ID. plus me giving you cigs could end with me losing my job. so you getting cigs is not worth it to me. I say that if you want cigs go get your ID than i would be happy to sell them to you.

I worked in a sweetshop selling cigarretes thirty years ago, and even back then it was impressed on us by the owners that you never sell to anyone who appears underage, if in any doubt at all, check/ refuse the sale.I'm not even sure the laws applied about underage smoking back then, maybe it was the owners stance on it. I think we carded customers at 18 years old (uk) in those days.
Customer "why did you answer the phone if you can't help me?"

My DH and I both suffer with allergy & sinus problems. When we visit our daughter in CA, I'm ever so nice to the pharmacist when they ask for ID and all that info. I'm actually thrilled to just show ID, give address, sign and buy.

Cause where I live, I have to pay for a friggin' doctor's appointment and get a prescription just to get sudafed. So tell you customers how lucky they are.

There's talk they may do that in my state, and I will be sending a politely-worded nastygram should it pass. Hopefully it will go on a ballot and not the legislature. Seeing as how I live in one of the worst allergy states in the nation, I want as few barriers as possible to the magical sniffles-be-gone pills.

If you believe they are considering it, send that letter now. If a law gets passed, it is much harder to get it removed then to not pass it in the first place.
