Yesterday was pretty slow, and I did have mostly pleasant customers, but a few annoying ones stuck out.
1. We do NOT give out coupons!
Woman came up to me wanting to purchase a handbag. I told her the price and she asked me if I had a coupon. I said no, we don't give out coupons at the register and that either she would have to check the newspaper for one or if she had the store card she would have gotten some sent in the mail. She asked if I had one laying around that someone had used earlier. I told her that I could not give out coupons that were already being used. Then she asked me again (English was not her first language) if I had a coupon to give her. I said "No!" Geez!
2. No store card, no coupon
This actually happened on Saturday. I was ringing up a customer and asked her if she wanted to sign up for a store card and save some money on her purchase. She said no (fine by me), but then asked if I had any coupons that I could apply to her purchase (not fine by me). I stared at her for a moment, honestly puzzled.
3. Rude or Not Rude?
I had a customer/coworker paying her bill at the register and she asked me if she should return some items since she hadn't used them. I told her that if she didn't even think about them since she had bought them then it would be best to return them since if she hadn't thought about them then she hadn't needed them in the first place.
As I was explaining this to her another customer came up to us and waited. The first customer was about to say something when the second customer cuts her off and says, "Can I jump in front of you for a minute?" I just looked at the first customer because I didn't know what to say to that. She said fine, go ahead, but I could see that she was very pissed. So I rang up the purchase. A sundress that was 25% off. I told her this.
"It doesn't cost less than that?" she said, and I stared at her for a moment before I said no. She knew that there was a 25% sign right over the rack where she had gotten the dang dress! So the transaction was done and she finally left and I got back to the first customer. Was that rude of the second customer? I thought it was. She could have just gone to another register where a sales associate was available.
4.Я не говорю по русский (Ya ne govaryu po-russki: I don't speak Russian).
Two Russian customers who didn't speak English a bit (well, one knew a teeny tiny bit). I rang them both up. After the transaction the second one tugged at her bag and muttered something. I said, "Huh?" and she did it again. I was still confused, and that only made her mad and impatient. She tugged at the bag and repeated what she'd said, only in an angrier tone. Finally the other one came back over, listened to what she said, and asked, "Another bag?"
Oh, you wanted me to double bag it! How was I supposed to know?!
I really wish I could speak other languages, though. I know a few phrases in Spanish, German, and Russian, but it isn't enough to be able to speak to the customers who don't know English.
