  • Bring it

These two guys come through my line with a few items. I ring them up, they go on their way. Less than 5 minutes later one of them comes back and asks if I did something with his 2 movies he rented from (our version of) the red box. I tell him I never saw any movies.

SC1: They were in the bottom of my (hand) basket, under my groceries.

I didn't remember them having a basket, and if they did, I have a stack of baskets here that I have been accumulating well over 30 minutes. So I start pulling the baskets apart looking through each one.

ME: I don't remember seeing anything. I would have noticed movies at the bottom of a basket. Are you sure you didn't put them in your bag or a pocket? (He had big pockets).

SC1: No they aren't in my pockets, but I will go double check the bags.

He leaves and 2 minutes later he and his friend come back in. Except they walk up to the customer service counter, which is closed and about 10 feet from my checkstand.

SC2: Did someone find some movies here?
ME: No, we looked through the baskets here and didn't find any. No one has turned any in.

SC2: I had a basket over here with the movies in it and it's gone. Theres a cart back there with a basket, I think that's it. (pointing to a cart of returns we have behind the counter, it happens to have a hand basket thrown on top)

I go behind the counter and look through the basket, nothing but broken, leaky, smelly, damaged stuff. This hand basket has been sitting here a while gross.

    ME: Nope, it's not here.

He goes over to my register w/ his friend and they sart re-going through the baskets. The also go through the baskets by both the doors.

SC2: Well, we had the movies in the bottom of our basket in this line!

By now they are just pissing me off. He just TOLD me he had the basket at the cs counter. So it never came through my line. Thats why I never saw the movies.

ME: We went through these baskets, twice. You said you had the basket over there....

SC2: Someone has them! I wanna file a theft report! Is your manager here?!?

Once he said theft report I didn't know if he was accusing me or not, but he was pretty lit. His aggression seemed accusatory and I didn't want to deal with it anymore.

Gladly, I call the manager. He comes up and SC2 starts going off on him about his movies. Manager tells him that they are not our responsibility and that he needs to contact the red box-ish company and file a claim through them. SC2 was pissed, but the manager held his ground and repeated, "It's not our responsibility." a couple more times.

Finally they left, but whatever. I bet he sat his stupid basket over there on the counter, forgot about it and left. Someone probably came by and thought, cool a basket with movies and walked out the door. Either that or they are sitting on a shelf somewhere.

But their movies never came through my line! We have cameras, bring it on!

On a side note I have to say it peeves me when people leave their krap at the bottom of the hand baskets. Cell phones, keys, wallets, prescriptions....I hate it even more now just for this reason. I don't want to have to touch your personal property. Ever. I don't even know if its legal for me to handle your prescription! I don't want to be blamed if something is missing.
    WELCOME

Idiot probably dropped it somewhere and someone thought "Hey! Free movies!".

And I hit the Red Box AFTER I leave the store proper. Who does it first?
I have a...thing. Wanna see it?

Often times I do. Many times I've gone and looked at the Red Box in my Giant Grocery Store and saw that there were some movies I wanted...only to have them checked out by the time I get through check-out.

Especially if it's a new release that everyone is looking for. If I see what I'm looking for in the RedBox, then I snag it then and there before someone gets it and I'm out of luck.

Seems perfectly logical to do it first, provided you can trust yourself not to lose them like batmoody's friends there. The movies are small, portable, and not perishable. The groceries are none of those things. Why would you want to stand waiting by the Red Box with all your groceries, including melting frozen foods, while some airhead browses the selection screens for ten minutes?

Also, if you have movies to return as well as rent, then going to the box afterwards won't save you from carrying movies into the store, unless you go to the box twice - once on your way in, and again on your way out. Not many people would want to do that.

Plenty of people do it first, sadly.

As for what happened to them... Well, I've known plenty of people (customers and employees) who will just return them to the machine if there's no one around.

I've done that several times myself, though if it's a movie I haven't seen I'll take it home and watch it first. One time I didn't take the found movie back until the next day, so I took it into the store and offered to pay 1 days late fees on it if it was overdue.

Note that I used to work in a restaurant that was right beside a video store. At least once a week someone would drop a movie off through our mail slot instead of putting it in the video store's drop slot which was very clearly labeled and less than 3 feet away. Odds are it was the same person doing it each week.
