  • So much win...So much fail

Aaaand the day after the complaint about our ninja road signs, THIS happened. Of course, a half-hour before I was supposed to go home.

We got a report of a stolen car. The guy was SURE it was not a repo or that he had misparked it.

    How was he so sure?

Because he had parked it running in the fire lane, with the keys in it, while he ran into the store to grab something!

Fail. Because he was too lazy to park and after 5-minutes we would have written him a ticket.

Win. Because a guy in front of the store watched the driver run-in, then walked up to the car and DROVE AWAY IN IT! It was not a friend pulling a prank!

Fail. Because the guy who stole the car was a douche.

Win. We have a nice video tape of the douche walking-up to the car and getting in, with a nice face shot, and the Police started looking for the car right away.

Fail. Because the driver of the vehicle did not know he had a warrant out for his arrest for an unpaid parking ticket and was booked by Police after he filed the stolen vehicle report

I still feel bad for the driver though; it's a tough lesson to learn, and some of the courts are so screwy that you might not know for years that you had an unpaid ticket, warrant, subpoena, etc. Example: You finish paying a fine with the local magistrate, but their computers never update the main office, so you are still in the system as having unpaid fines, after which time the main computer will automatically issue a warrant for your arrest. You have to get a paper from the main office to bring to the magistrate to have signed to bring to the main office to prove you paid your fine! How about a simple phone call people??? Sigh. But then, catching people using the system like this just brings-in more $ in fines.

Whenever I see one of those I'm always tempted to hop in and park it on the other side of the lot. Or take the keys, and chuck them as hard as I can towards the open parking lot, but then, I'm a bitch.

My brother (who didn't own a car a the time) once got a letter from the city stating he had over 900 unpaid parking tickets totaling to a fine of -$0.04, and that if he didn't pay by a certain date a warrant would be issued for his arrest.

That's right. They told him he'd go to jail unless he went to city hall to collect 4 cents they didn't owe him for parking tickets that hadn't been written on a car that didn't exist.

Turns out to have been a glitch in new software. Apparently hundreds, if not thousands, of those letters got sent out.

Awesome, they were giving away money rather than taking it away But I guess they cold prove the fault and therefore not have to pay. Did someone not wonder why so many more letters were being produced than normal?

Oh and the OP: Idiot if he knew he had a warrant, it's like the druggies ringing up the cops because someone stole their favourite drug :P

Something I've just recently learned, which is apparently a problem in this area:

There are a lot of warrants for arrest issued for failure to appear for a court hearing, except the subject never received the notice to appear because it was mailed to a previous address they haven't lived at in years.

On the other hand, I'm fairly certain anyone in this situation had another way besides a letter in the mail to know they were supposed to appear. Paying bail, for instance, should be a hint that you'll have to show up in court eventually. Also, it's the responsibility of the individual to fill out change of address forms.

As far as post office change of address forms go, the kind where the post office forwards mail from your old address to your new one, they only work for a certain amount of time, I think perhaps one year, at most, maybe less.
So someone sending mail to your old address later than that, it'll just get delivered to the old address, and if that person sends it back, it goes to dead letters.

And as for the change of address cards you send out to individuals and businesses with your new address, well, no one could possibly remember every agency, business, etc. they've dealt with to send cards to them all.
I've no idea where courts and police get addresses from, if a person has had no dealings with the police or courts before.

Now, if they get addresses normally from driver's licenses, then yeah, that should be updated when you move.

            Madness takes it's toll....
            Please have exact change ready.

Sort of related... I had to update my info through Sallie Mae about my student loans, and somehow they had my address as somewhere in California.
Now, for those not in the know, I haven't lived in California since I was 5, then the family moved to Missouri.

Never been arrested, but I did once get a jury duty notice from Clarke County.

I'm registered in *Jackson* County, and have been my whole adult life.
