We had a conference going on yesterday at the hotel with many vendors that needed packages delivered. Here were my two favorites:
Name that package!
CG: Clueless Guy
Me: Myself
CG: (names changed to protect the stupid) I should have a package here for Mr. Smith.
Me: I don't have a package for that name.
CG: Well it should be here. Try "Company Name".
Me: Nothing under that either, sorry.
CG: Oh, they probably sent it under Mr. Jones then.
Me: (sigh) I'm sorry sir, but I don't have anything under that name either.
At this point he left to get more information. He returns after a few minutes:
CG: Here's the tracking number.
Me: (finally something useful) That package is under Yamada. Here it is.
Yea, he had a company name and two very American sounding names and the package was listed under a Japanese name. And of course it's our fault that it took so long to get the package delivered.
Slow service.
A "gentleman" was annoying one of our Events staff over needing a package delivered. At the time I was on another delivery and needed to get back to my office to check for the package. During the walk back to the office, I received three radio calls from three people about finding this package.
I manage to get to the office and find the package (again with the wrong name) and deliver it to the appropriate vendor booth. The person I give it to is very happy to get the package and thanks me for the prompt delivery. Total turnaround time approx. 5 minutes.
About five minutes after I finish this delivery the "gentleman" is still complaining about the package being delivered to the nice girl in Events. She calls me again about the package and I ask if it's a guy in a red shirt. She says he's wearing blue. I inform her that I delivered the package about 5 minutes ago to a nice guy in red at their booth.
She later told me that she relayed that information to Mr. Complainer and rather than say thank you or apologize for being an ass, he just grunted and walked away before she even finished telling him it was delivered.
Bonus today story:
It's my event and I need it now!
So we are very busy today. Our hotel has 2 large ballrooms and they are booked solid all day. Meetings in the morning/early afternoon with wedding receptions tonight.
Now I've been here for almost 3 years and I know how long it takes to flip a room and get the set up done. I also know that the additional setup (flowers, center pieces, etc) adds additional time to this. One of the dinner receptions starts at 8pm tonight with room setup starting at 4pm. This is plenty of time...unless you are the florist.
The florist shows up at 10:30 and needs to start setting up the flowers. We inform them that the room will not be ready until 4pm for set up...
AF: Angry Florist
EC: Events contact
AF: This just won't do. We were told by our boss to be here and get all this setup done by 1pm at the latest. These arrangements are very complex and we need to have them done!
EC: I don't have a room for you. We won't even be beginning the room setup until 4pm.
AF: That's impossible. How many events do you even have in a day!?! We need to get these arrangements perfect and done by 1pm.
EC: Well, the dinner reception doesn't begin until 8pm and I'm sorry, but the room is being used for meetings until this afternoon. You are going to need to come back later.
AF: But there won't be enough time! (They are expecting to have it done in 2.5 hours this morning, but 4 hours this evening apparently won't be enough time?)
EC: I'm sorry, but there's nothing we can do.
AF: (makes angry noise) But I don't want to work until 8pm. This is ridiculous! Plus I know the wedding party will be here at 6pm, my boss is neighbors with the bride's mother and she said they would be here at 6pm. We have to get in there and get this done before the wedding party gets here or they will be in there watching us!
(So now the truth comes out. She just doesn't want to work "late" and is apparently afraid of people watching her work?)
EC: Yes, they have a room for cocktails at 6pm. However, the doors for the reception area will be locked until at least 7pm so you don't need to worry about people being in there. I'm sorry, but you're just going to need to come back at 4pm.
AF finally seems to get that we aren't going to be able to magically make the room available 5.5 hours early and leaves. Ugh.
