  • Government inefficiency 101

The irony on this one is... well... umm... I'm lacking my thesaurus to look up an adequate word.

So, this was over two calls. First call was to a government agency. Note it is illegal to have a policy that you do not accept relay calls (there are ways around it... you can make rules that make it practically impossible for someone to call on relay, like all calls must take less than say, 5 minutes). Want to guess who wasn't following that law?
Yup, the government wasn't following it's own law.
    It gets better.
The caller asked me to then dial the FCC complaint line.
Want to guess what the person at the FCC said?
Yup, the FCC rep gave me a rather rude "lecture" about how neither I nor the deaf user could possibly know the laws regarding relay.

So to surmise, we have gone from one government employee who doesn't know the law hanging up on us to one who should know the law hanging up on us... what the hell...

And of course both of them were rude pricks about it.
Is there some rule that government employees have to be dicks? <- Rhetorical question

Please tell me you kept calling until you found someone to report those jacktards to.

... the reason is, is that it takes at least 25 years with the organization to be that much of a bastard.

Well, it's true; you just can't join...

It needs an atmosphere where your natural bastardness can grow and develop and take a meaningful shape in today's complex society.

I'm not sure, but I'll be happy to look for it once somebody tells me where the policy manuals (that I've been working without for two months) are. Wouldn't surprise me, though. I'm in a state agency now, and most of my co-workers seem perpetually angry about something.

No, not at all. In fact, some of us try really hard not to be. It's just that, like everyone else here, we have to suffer the idiots, scammers, entitlement whores and spoiled brats who make up the general public. And everyone here knows how easy it is to burn out on a steady diet of that.

I apologize for my fellow government workers. I'm sorry you had to put up with that.

We're going to ignore this part of the OP, since that's a Fratching question if I've ever seen one.

Let's focus on the specifics of the story offered, and leave generalizations about the government out of it.

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

Damn that makes me mad. If an agency MAKES rules and expects everyone else to follow them (or else), then they can bloody well follow those rules themselves.

It sounds like the poor caller gave up after running into those two assholes. Which is too bad but completely understandable.

If it makes you feel any better I once refused a sale to government agency here because they were refusing to either pay sales tax or provide me with an exemption form.

My argument was simple. If you believe this policy is, in your words, "ridiculous" why are you imposing it on us?

No answer was provided, but the form eventually was.

Just a note to everyone else: This is not limited to government agencies at all. There are MANY examples of this kind of "rules are fine for everyone but me" behavior in every walk of life. As Boozy said, it's fine to bash incompetence and hypocrisy where we find it, but not to generalize about government workers, MOST of whom are doing their jobs as best as they can.

                  Specific examples=OK.

                  Generalizing=not OK.

Would those many examples be all the other posts in this forum?

I know you can't interject your own comments on these calls, but I would have been fuming, telling the FCC guy that "Well, knowing these laws IS part of my job, and I'm damn good at it!..." >_<

yes, but you see I only work for a government contractor, not the government itself, so therefore I do not know my job

Wait, did he mean this in a, "You're deaf and you're a relay person, so there's somehow no way you could have found them and then recalled them later." Or more of a "I'm smarter than you and I know everything, therefore you're wrong about these laws."

A little bit of both, both the attitude of there is no way a mere deaf person or relay operator would know about the laws and that as an actual government employee he must know more than a mere subcontractor.

You're a relay operator? That was one of my first jobs and it was terrible. Then again I rarely got real relay phone calls since I worked grave in my call center. Swing wasnt a bad shift, actual calls from deaf/hoh people. I'm nostalgic about the job, but I don't think I have the patience for it anymore
