I was ringing out a nice lady and we were discussing that [other location] has a liquor dept. in addition to their grocery aisles. She made mention that I'd have to buy it (due to local ordinace) before my shift was over. As an afterthought she said, "Oh, you couldn't buy it anyway" and pointed to my stomach. I didn't even get what she meant until after.

Advice that must need repeating........never, never, ever, assume a woman is preggers unless she is dicussing her pregnancy with you or you see a baby coming out of her vagina.

I'm small but have a gut. Always have, always will. And people have implied in conversation that I was pregnant before. I even got chewed out when I was 13 for it. I usually refer to the biblical Mary and roll my eyes. It's ridiculous to assume.

My immediate bitch response is to sigh heavily and say, "I'm infertile. I can't have children. I'm just fat." This always results in a horrorstruck and foot in mouth aware person.

I know it's a horrible thing to say, but at least I'm saving them from saying it to an actual infertile woman. I'm not fat now, by the way; but I used to be, and got that comment a lot. Wish people would engage their brains before opening their mouths.

also: pregnant women are allowed to buy booze as long as they're over 21...they just shouldn't drink it. maybe they're buying for a baby shower! sheesh. just all kinds of rude.

I once had someone accuse me of being preggers. I was getting ready for an eating contest at work, and I told the lady I wasn't with child but she wouldn't listen.

I worked with a girl that said that a few times to customers. It was always 'Oh, when are you expecting?' and you could totally see it in their faces that they weren't pregnant. I was glad when this girl finally quit.

I had it for about 2 years from a slightly odd man who used to catch buses from the stand next to mine!
I got such gems as "you shouldn't be carrying that shopping in your condition" or you must be careful of that baby in there"

Admittedly, I was "cuddly", I still am but no way looked preggers.. & my youngest at the time was 7ish

There's another reason you shouldn't say that to women----an acquaintance of mine lost her baby at 6 months. She had to carry the baby, dead, until the surgery that was scheduled. Yeah, mentioning the pregnancy? Not good.

Many surgeries will also make women appear pregnant when they are just really bloated from the surgery. I had laproscopic surgery and was shocked at my bloated belly when I woke up. I looked just like I did after delivery.

What is horrible about speaking the truth to someone who has decided that tact and discretion are not to be part of the conversation? I think it's a freaking perfect thing to say.
