  • wherin the phone hits the floor before my jaw does

    OK, this gem just happened.

Me: (hotel) this is Smiley speaking, how may I help you?
SC: Yeah, I want a room for like $20.
    *phone hits the floor*
    Me: sorry?
SC: yeah, I think $20 is reasonable for this area.
Me: our rate is $69, cheapest within 3 miles is $45, you might try your luck at the smaller places south of downtown.
SC: well, you're not very helpful, I'm making a reasonable offer.
Me: $69, take it or leave it, I aint priceline, I don't take bids, though for the record they aren't selling us for less than $50 right now.
    SC: *click*

I know the motel six off the freeway is like 50$ right now. Tell him theres a crack den somewhere that'll let him stay for the night for 20$. How is 20$ even close to reasonable for ANY motel. Even the seedy, dope & fuck hotels aren't 20$ for a night. They charge hourly, but they're still not 20$ for a night.

Not to mention, $69 is pretty cheap for this area as it is... most of the hotels between the airport and downtown are at least $10-$25 more than us... at least the ones that are the same star rating or slightly better (i'm not counting those sleezy places that the crack whores use)

The 50$ place i'm talking about is the sleezy place crack whores use. Its about the same price for the party/cheap hotel on a DECENT street where you wont get robbed outright. Its also next to a Dennys, so you can guess who rents rooms there (drug dealers, partiers, etc).

$20 might allow him to pitch a tent at a local park and that's about it.

$20 doesn't even get you a tank of gas for an auto, how in the hell did he think it would get him a room?
          look! it's ghengis khan!

I don't know about getting any rooms for $20, but I am going to Las Vegas and I got a fabulous online deal for only $27 a night, and no its not some cheap run down motel. Its at Excalibur (the big white castle next to the big black pyramid) which is a very nice and inexpensive casino hotel located right there on the strip. It'll really be good to get away from work for a little while.
As for this customer, I'm sure that even if you told him $27, he would probably still argue.

I was in college in the late 70s and early 80s. I would travel around the country during the summer, and even then, I would have been thrilled to get a room for $20. The only motel rooms you could get at that price were real dumps - the kind of place more used to charging by the hour. $27 was about the least you could expect to pay for a clean room with a good bed and shower.

$20 wouldn't even cover housekeeping and a share of maintenance, front office, and other wages. Then there's depreciation on the building and furnishings, and ... bah. It can't do it.

Now at the Casino - that's a totally different thing. The income from the casino doesn't come from the rooms. The rooms encourage the customers to gamble at 'their' casino, not some other one. They're almost a marketing expense, and any income gained from them offsets the expense!

                    2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                    3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                    4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

If there was a place that really was that cheap I'd live there!

Seriously. The nightly cost works out to be cheaper than the rent I pay every month. And not only that, but they even clean my room for me unless I put out the do not disturb sign on the door.

You should have taken on the offer telling him that you had a very special room for that price and when he came in given him the keys to the utility room.

                        Hey, it's a room!

Thing is, I know people in the casino industry, and they've all said the same thing... if the hotel is depending on its rooms for profit then they are doomed.
The hotel rooms are the milk of the casino industry (they make no profit off of them, but they know you have to walk past the slots, tables, and three buffets to get to it)

For $20 you can't even get into a crummy motel that still advertises "COLOR TV" on the sign.

I once saw hotel rooms about 5 years ago in Nevada for $10 a night. I slept in the truck. :P
