It's not actually very surprising to me. Consider the following near-universal facts:

    - Drugs are expensive, partly because they're illegal.
    - Drugs are addictive, so she can't simply stop using them to save money.
    - Drugs are debilitating, so it's hard to hold down a job to pay for them. This leads to shoplifting.
    - Drugs tend to make people irrational, especially if they're getting withdrawal symptoms - or conversely, are heavily using several kinds at once. This makes them less careful when they shoplift.

So all of the above are actually quite a common pattern...

I'm thinking more the baby channel. Since it can stretch and all. (and if she's walking around with that up there, it'd be a heck of a lot more comfortable than having a package of god knows what shoved up your ass)

Okay I just crossed my legs. The visual of her with...drugs...there...just...No. I feel sorry for her child, and just hope she hasn't done any irreversible mental/emotional damage to him or her. Chromatix nailed it though, as far as drugs and shoplifting. Sad, but true.

I'm just guessing here, but, i can't imagine that would be too comfortable, either.

*also crosses legs* That just makes me shudder.

If she was going to return them later for money, assuming that she *doesn't* sell them on the street AND she got away with them, what's Big Yellow Sales Tag's return policy on laptops and other such things without recipts?
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

If you're going to shoplift, try not to have illegal things on you. Y'know. In case you DO get caught like this idiot!
No. I kind of prefer them to be this stupid. Were it not for their stupidity, we wouldn't be amused by the stories of their idiocy.

No, she was most likely going to take them to a nearby pawn shop and get pennies on the dollar for them. =>_<=

The worst part of this is that Child Protective Services is NOT a good situation for a kid. It's a well-meaning government service that is, sadly, hampered by the fact that it IS a government agency, with all of the ineptitude, underfunding, and red tape that entails. At its best, it's harmless (to the welfare of the children)... and that's rare.

But it's unquestionably better than the situation described in the OP.

It's easy. Put the two laptops in a cart and push it out the doors.

If LP can't watch you enough and you look like you paid for them already, nobody will think twice about it.

Yeah a buddy of my room mate did that with a 50' inch tv. He came in with a cart, quickly removed the security sensor, loaded up the TV and just wheeled the cart right out. No one stopped him

At the big computer shop beside my office, there are four ways out:

                        - Down the up-only escalators which lead into the back part of the store. I've *never* seen these escalators not working, so you'd make quite a scene going down them. It's also in direct view of the Customer Service desk.

                        - Through the main exit door after the checkouts. This means you have to go through the checkouts, which are deliberately laid out to be awkward to shuffle through if someone's already there.

                        - Through the second exit door after the warehouse desks (where you can pick up and pay for pre-orders). Here you have to run the gaultlet of at least half a dozen warehouse clerks.

                        - Through the main entrance at the front. This is visible to the checkout staff through a glass wall.

All of these potential exits are covered by the usual detector gadgetry - most items have a passive inductor stuck to them, with high-value items getting an active transponder. I would be surprised if there weren't also at least one and probably two cameras pointed at them too.

Getting something valuable out of there probably isn't impossible, but at some point it's easier to hold down a day job...

Men and women have been caught in prison, and other places, having lots of stuff hidden away in both of those areas. Even razor blades. *shivers*

the sad thing is... i can just imagine the woman logging in to M3C or PFB to write a complaint about Best Buy for pressing charges on her...

i hope the baby is very safe and very well cared for
I've heard of PFB but what is M3C?

Similar to PFB but also has a discussion forum. And the letters range from the banal to the bizarre...
