  • The thieves are toying with us

Yes, I'm on vacation right now, but I've ben saving this tale because I was too pissed off about it to post right when it happened.

Over the past several weeks, my store has been targeted by a group of ink shoplifters. Whoever they are, they have a magnet that allows them to quietly open the security acrylics and slip out the ink, then they stash the box somewhere and leave. They've been costing us thousands of dollars but as of yet we've been unable to catch them because we simply don't have enough hours to keep bodies on the sales floor.

So, thus imbued with a sense of impunity, these guys have been getting more and more brazen. First they started leaving the empty boxes in more and more obvious places, even leaving them out in plain sight, just to let us know that they are getting away with it.

The Thursday before I left on my trip was a truck day, and because hours are now even TIGHTER, we were down to single coverage. One associate per department, one cashier, one manager. I was in the back room breaking down pallets and sorting them by department. I don't know what my colleagues were doing, but while I was out back the thieves came in again, and this time decided to get cute. They stole a shitload of ink, but rather than leaves the acrylics empty, they started taking MP3 accessories off the shelf, loading them into the boxes, then stashed the boxes all over the store. We were finding them for DAYS. And inititially we thought there was a massive MP3 accessory theft and wrote all that stuff off ($800 worth). But we actually found MORE than $800 worth of MP3 accessories hidden around the department.

I am completely at a loss to understand how this was not noticed. Sure, I was in the back, but it was not a busy day, so the electronics guy should have seen something.

I asked Focker half-seriously that if I were the one to eventually catch these guys, and were to "accidentally" belt him/her/them over the head, would I lose my job? he said that not only would he NOT fire me, but he'd give me a raise.

(Yes, I know doing so would be stupid, and I'm not actually going to do that, but it's fun to speculate )

I just hope we catch these guys soon before the area loss prevention manager decides to fire us all for negligence (and yes, he DOES have the authority to do that. He can even terminate general and district managers).

Start getting documentation from the DM and even the RVP about the hours being cut. Show that to your Area LP that it's not your fault, nor is it the stores fault that you don't have the hours to fight the shoplifters.

Maybe if he does terminate someone.. go to the media and watch the fireworks begin!

Huh. And here I just learned from a guy at Office Max the other day that people will come in with their empty/bad ink cartriges and switch them out with the cartiges from the DISPLAY PRINTERS! And I thought that was bad; but your guys take the cake!

Maybe get some undercover surveillance; maybe 1-little camera too. You might get lucky!

Aren't there any cameras set up? I'd think in a high-risk place like an office supply store, there'd be cameras in all the high-theft areas.

Regardless, you shouldn't lose your jobs over these s. Corporate is very unfair if they fire you for something that's outside your control.

I agree with XCashier. There are no cameras in your store?!

In view of the lower staff numbers, can't the inks be put some place more visible or locked away with only those little paper slips available?

If corporations were fair, this board wouldn't be quite so busy ~_~

I would not put it past them to "assume" that the people working there -- who, incidentally, are probably NOT allowed to stop shopliftfers even if they're caught red-handed -- are the first, best line of defense...

The fact is, the thieves have your store -- quite correctly -- pegged as an easy mark. Maybe corporate will let you bring in some off-duty cops or security guards as Plainclothes guys to see if they can help?

Has anyone considered that this is an inside job? It just sounds like you hit it on the head with the comment that the electronics guy should have noticed that much inventory being swapped out. If it's him or his buddies that are doing it, they thefts would be taking place only during certain shifts or on certain days.

It's not a pleasant thing to consider, but maybe it needs to be done. Keep track of when the thefts seem to be occurring and you may be able to figure out a pattern.

Good luck, and I hope you catch whoever's doing it.

Great idea! Then the store can hire and spend money training replacements who will likely be less vigilant, and worse in their regular job duties to boot.

Last year, at one of the stores in our district, a gang of thieves broke into their electronics cage and stole $3,800 of merchandise in a matter of minutes.

This store has one of the largest backrooms in the company. Tell me this wasn't an inside job. How would the thieves know where to go so quickly?

Fortunately, they were caught, but thanks to these fucks we had to re-arrange half the electronics backstock to keep things like TVs and stereos away from the exits.

It may or may not be an inside job. I really don't know. I don't know exactly when these thefts are taking place (the one I mentioned is the only one so far where we even have an approximate timeframe). It's certainly possible, but at this point there is not any real evidence that I am aware of.

It took our head office(s) several tries to finally get a half-assed system working to where it's harder to steal packages of Swarovski Crystals. If anyone beads or does other crafts with the Swarovski brand, you should know that those things can get expensive and fast. The cheapest my store carries for this brand is about $5 for 30 beads, which isn't a lot for five bucks and that's considering no one needs a whole lot.

If the ink thefts isn't an inside job, then I don't know what is. While I don't condone it or even like it, I don't actually blame the theives -- the two ink cartridges I use/need for my printer costs more then what I paid for the damn machine. Not that I would ever consider just stealing ink or anything.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

LOL, I have handbeaded elizabethans that took 2 *pounds* of natural cream seed pearls. I actually have a few ounces left.

I don't buy them in 16 inch strings, I go through them in bulk. If I wanted to, I could go through the crystals by the pound also =) I would just need to have a customer who wanted to actually pay me to do it. I haven't shopped for customers for a while, maybe Ill make some eliz costume components and put them on etsy.

I'm wondering what do you consider a person from another store coming and ripping you off? Is that an inside job?

A major regional company my sister worked for had all their departments in DIFFERENT stores keyed alike, so an employee at location A went to location B and started stealing stuff, even better if that wasn't a 24hr location and if they had security codes because did I mention they were stupid? Then the LP people "lost" the tapes of stuff being stolen.

That's just stupid. Where I worked the safe and the backroom door codes were supposed to be changed every couple months. Not that it always happened...but the manager picked the codes so no two stores would likely ever have the same.
