At our store, we do not allow cash back on debit cards. All we can do is show them the ATM and explain out policy. Most people are cool with it except for one lady.
She bought a couple of cheap items and swiped her card, telling me she wants cash back. I explain our policy to her and point out the ATM. She suddenly goes still, jaw open and holding the card in the mid-air. She looked so offended my co-worker who had not heard the exchange thought I'd said something incredibly rude.
She continued to stand there so I again explain that it's store policy and I couldn't go against it. She continued to look offended and said "Is that so?" in an angry tone. She turned around without another word and left her purchases ($2 dollars worth) behind.
I understand that we have an unusual policy but we are a small store. I know the ATM charges an arm and leg but I cannot go against my bosses. That is how someone loses a job. Not getting cash back is not the end of the world.
