At our store, we do not allow cash back on debit cards. All we can do is show them the ATM and explain out policy. Most people are cool with it except for one lady.

She bought a couple of cheap items and swiped her card, telling me she wants cash back. I explain our policy to her and point out the ATM. She suddenly goes still, jaw open and holding the card in the mid-air. She looked so offended my co-worker who had not heard the exchange thought I'd said something incredibly rude.

She continued to stand there so I again explain that it's store policy and I couldn't go against it. She continued to look offended and said "Is that so?" in an angry tone. She turned around without another word and left her purchases ($2 dollars worth) behind.

I understand that we have an unusual policy but we are a small store. I know the ATM charges an arm and leg but I cannot go against my bosses. That is how someone loses a job. Not getting cash back is not the end of the world.

It could be for a valid reason, such as theft. A small, local store doesn't do cash back because they are safe-dropping funds constantly and the potential for getting robbed is quite high. Why invite trouble?

Oh, big whoop de doo to her. How hard is it to go to a branch of her bank and get money out of the ATM there? Even if it is a pita, don't take it out on a small store. They have their reasons for doing the things they do.

I see that no-cash for debits in a lot of places, so it's not really new.

Can't believe she so so miffed and upset and speechless about it. Can't wait to see her reaction to something worse like a store being out of something or closed!

If the store we closed she'd stand there staring like that, and ask the "closed" sign, "Is that so?" lol. Seriously, though, people need to get over themselves. At the c-store the most we can give cash back on debits is $20. If you're REALLY nice about it, I might let you split your purchases up, swipe your card again, and get $20 on that transaction. If you're not, well, then, too bad. You lost your chance.
