  • There's Only One of Me, Please Be Patient!

What makes you think that giving me your stuff will make me get to the register faster?

One customer did that to me while I was helping out a group of girls who wanted to see some sunglasses that were locked up. She kept following me around and waving me down. I kept telling her that I would get to her in a minute and that I couldn't leave while the case was still opened. She didn't care. Just mumbled, "Come on, I don't have time to wait around, just ring me up," and handed me an item that she wanted to return. I was dumb enough to take it, so I had to hold on to it while she glared at me, waiting for me to go to the register and help her out. The girls told me that they would call for me if they needed anything else, so I ran over to the register and got the other woman out of there.

I've been dumb enough to do stuff like that in the past, but usually it was right at the register where I kept their things. I never did that away from the register, though. Next time that happens I'll just try to keep my arms down at my sides and I'll tell the customer to hold onto it.

Besides that one woman, there were at least five or six other people waiting on me to open cases for them and ring them up at the register, so I was trying to work on a "first come first serve" routine. That doesn't work that well when you're the only one working in a large department.

*I tried to call a manager to ask if I could get some help, but whaddya know, we didn't have a greet sheet that listed who was closing that night. So I was still stuck there by myself.

It appears you have a manager or an owner problem. I would have left the store and never come back. Not because of you, but because I see the greed associated with one poor employee run ragged while customers wait. I don't patronize places like that.

My parents had small businesses and they never asked their employees to do anything they wouldn't do. Owners who just take the money and don't do anything are scum.

Owners and managers who just take the money and never do anything should be banned from running a business.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

At my store you would think that more people would know about what's going on, but because it's such a big company and popular store they just kind of let it happen.

            I feel for you SourRobot.

Same thing unfortunately happens to myself and my co-workers (who are great people btw). Another big company as well.

It's not just in retail that you get managers like that.
When I worked in Car Park Services (for the city council) our Head of Dept insisted that we open on Saturdays (we were the only part of the council who did). We were always quiet on those days, probably because most people didn't expect us to be open, but you'd get a few come in or call us and there would have to be one Service Advisor and one senior.
The senior would usually be J (who liked the extra money) or the office manager T, but never ever the Head. He wanted us to come in on Saturdays but would never do it himself.
