What makes you think that giving me your stuff will make me get to the register faster?
One customer did that to me while I was helping out a group of girls who wanted to see some sunglasses that were locked up. She kept following me around and waving me down. I kept telling her that I would get to her in a minute and that I couldn't leave while the case was still opened. She didn't care. Just mumbled, "Come on, I don't have time to wait around, just ring me up," and handed me an item that she wanted to return. I was dumb enough to take it, so I had to hold on to it while she glared at me, waiting for me to go to the register and help her out. The girls told me that they would call for me if they needed anything else, so I ran over to the register and got the other woman out of there.
I've been dumb enough to do stuff like that in the past, but usually it was right at the register where I kept their things. I never did that away from the register, though. Next time that happens I'll just try to keep my arms down at my sides and I'll tell the customer to hold onto it.
Besides that one woman, there were at least five or six other people waiting on me to open cases for them and ring them up at the register, so I was trying to work on a "first come first serve" routine. That doesn't work that well when you're the only one working in a large department.
*I tried to call a manager to ask if I could get some help, but whaddya know, we didn't have a greet sheet that listed who was closing that night. So I was still stuck there by myself.
