  • Not a valid number.

Okay, if you're going to give me some bogus card, least make sure it has the right amount of numbers.

Taking a reservation, got all the way to the payment part of the reservation and this happens:

Me: "And will you be holding this with a credit card, or a 4pm hold?"
    Guest: "A credit card."
Me: "Alright, can you read the numbers off your card?"
    Guest: "1234 4321 3241."
Me: "That's not enough numbers sir."
    Guest: "Yes it is!"
Me: "No, sir, it's not. Cards are fourteen to fifteen digits long. That's only twelve."
    Guest: "Read them back."
    Me: "1.."
    Guest: "Yep.."
And I do that for the next 11 numbers.. then he says.
    "That's all of them!"
Me: "Then I'm sorry sir, as my system can't see this as a valid card, I'm going to have to put the room under a four pm hold, or you can use another card."
Guest: "I don't have any other card!"
Me: "Then I'll have to put it under a four pm hold and you have til today at 4 to come get the room, otherwise this will be cancelled and it's a possibility your room will be sold."
Guest: "Well fuck you and your system, you can cancel the damn room. I'm not happy. You're RUINING my vacation!"

Dave, take your customers back. I don't want 'em. :P

Visa cards used to have 13 digits, grouped as 4xxx xxx xxx xxx, but any such are long expired by now.

My Visa has 16 digits on the front, organized 1234-5678-9012-3456, with of course the 3 digits on the back for security.

And no that is not my actual Visa card number. You're welcome to try to use that card number though!

I thought almost all CC had 16 digits (as in 4 groups of 4 numbers maybe AmEx is the exception). we do a LOT of CC orders at the pizza place and all of the CC I have dealt with have the 4 groups of numbers (one of the ways I can glance at the numbers I have entered into the POS to see if I did it wrong)

I wonder if the guy was reading off the numbers from his Interac/Debit card?

You are correct, all credit cards are 16 digits (even most store cards) with the exception of American Express which is the one company that has to be different just for the sake of being really fracking annoying.

                  And as a friendly reminder

                  37- American Express
                  4- Visa
                  5- Mastercard
                  6011- Discover
                  7- most store cards

There are more, but I don't remember them all, that is when you start getting into international cards and hardly used cards.

I have a credit card that only has 9 numbers.

Of course, it is a store credit card. I wonder...

Every credit card I've ever had has had 16 digits, plus the 3-digit security code on the back.

I wonder if he was using some sort of store card or other ID like someone else suggested.

Of course, he was probably just outright making something up.
