  • Why Don't You Follow Another State's Rules?

Today wasn't a horrible day shift, but for one woman, whose words stuck with my all. Day. Long. She got ice water, only, we only have ice on the fountain so she got A in the kitchen to get her water. Then she came up to the counter with her ice water and two doughnuts. I smile, I'm all customer service friendly, etc. The transaction goes something like this:
    MW: Minnesota Woman
ME: I think my head 'sploded!

ME: **rings up her donuts, looks at her glass** Ice water?
    MW: Yes just water
    ME: And ice?
    MW: Well yeah ice water
ME: Okay **hits button to charge for a 12 oz glass of ice**
MW: You CHARGE for ICE?? I've never heard of such a thing!
ME: **as she goes on about it** Yes ma'am **gives her her total**
MW: How much were the doughnuts??
    ME: 79 cents each, ma'am.
MW: Oh my God! I don't believe it! **goes on and on**
ME: **smiling blankly, silently willing her to hurry the hell up**
MW: **the gem that broke my brain** Why don't you follow Minnesota's rules???
ME: Uh...Bwa? **biting tongue so hard to keep from telling her that she's in IOWA now**
MW: **grumbles about doughnuts should be 49 cents, and that she's never heard of charging for ice, finally pays and leaves**
ME: **goes on to other customers, trying to get my brain to work right again**

Seriously...Why would I, being in IOWA, follow another state's "rules"? Furthermore, the c-store chain I work at has several locations in MN. As far as I know, prices are the same for doughnuts & such across the board. Either she's never stepped foot in a c-store in my chain (doubtful), or (more likely) was just throwing a fit to throw a fit. Either way, she left me in disbelief the entire remainder of the day, and this happened less than two hours after my shift started! Disclaimer: I don't mean this in a discriminatory or derogatory way against anyone in Minnesota. That just happened to be the state she was from! I swear!

When I worked for Kilwin's at North Pier in Chicago (both are long gone from there, sadly), we had people fuss about paying a dime for a cup of ice. The truth of the matter is that the charge was introduced to keep people from using up all of the store's paper cups before paying customers could get their sodas and milkshakes.

I'm not sure why we charge for ice, other than cups maybe? I just know that this woman made my brain malfunction worse than a PC with a blue screen of death!

You still have to wash said glass. Miniscule as it may be, that's extra time and labor to be paid for.

Depending on the amount of traffic you had that day, it's also one less glass to be filled with soda or tea or juice, all of which are more profitable than that glass of ice.

LOL no we're talking about a throw away um..,.foam? coffee cup thing. No washing, unless the SC wants to? Anyway...Yes pop and tea and coffee are more profitable. Either way, one shouldn't go into a store in a state outside their home state and expect things to be the same in that state as they are in their home state. **shakes head** Some people...

Someone complained about the fact that [campus food services location in campus centre] charged for hot water. Now, I'm not 100% certain about this, but I really can't believe they charge for hot water (I might have bought a tea bag too every time, but I doubt it, and I've have noticed if somewhere on campus charged for water, so I'd know not to stop there for a refill). I suspect that she was too stupid to know the difference between being charged for water, and being charged for a cup.

And seriously, is there anywhere these days that doesn't charge for cups? I know that some places used to just cover it in the cost of the drink, but I thought that went out ages ago.

Bet this SC, if she ever took a vacation to England, would ask the British shops & cops to follow America's laws. She wouldn't like their answer.

Ha! Kristev, you're probably right! Seriously, y'all have no idea how hard I was biting my tongue to keep from letting off a smartass (and likely offensive) remark, along the lines of, "Check yourself, bitch. You're in IOWA now!"

Wait... Is she suggesting that Minnesota state government sets the price of donuts there? That comment doesn't make sense on ANY level, even when I try to look at it from a Sucky Customer point of view!

Love the fact that she referred to it as a 'rule'.

                    An ice/cup rule.

Um, what? Since when did states govern the price of ice, or care about donut prices? Funny thing, though: my company has all stores follow the laws of all states. How our store does lunches is based on California's laws. (I'm in WI)

Heaven forbid she'd be there over the 4th of July! "Why aren't y'all celebrating? It's MN rules!" Or some such.

I seriously doubt charging for ice is a matter of state law.

The cafeteria at work doesn't charge for the ice, just the cup (5 cents). Though if you buy a bottled drink and get a cup of ice to go with it, they don't charge you for the cup.

I've never gotten just ice at a convenience store, but the 7-11 across the street from me has a sign by the soda fountain that says cups are inventory and please don't throw them away, so I would assume if you just get a cup of ice they will charge you something for it.

When I was bartending in Houston, we would get these folks from Louisiana who couldn't understand why we didn't give out to-go cups like they did in their state. Made fun of our "stupid" liquor laws.
