At my hotel if you do not have a CC you can still get a room with cash if you leave a $100 deposit on top of paying for the room and tax. Sound simple? One girl did not have a clue.
Me: I'll just need your ID and CC please.
SC: What if I don't have a CC?
Me: I can take cash, but I'll need $100 deposit on top of the room and tax.
SC: I don't understand.
Me: I need $XX.YY for the room and tax, but I also need an additional $100 which will get refunded in the morning after we check the room for damages.
SC: *blank look* *Hands me a $100 bill
Me: Thank you. This will cover the deposit. I just need an additional $XX.YY for the room and tax.
SC: So you're saying I'll get my change back in the morning?
Me: No. I'm saying I need $XX.YY to pay for the room, but I also need to hold onto an additional $100 until checkout. Your total is $1xx.yy, but you'll get $100 back in the morning.
SC: Oh. *leaves*
