  • I WANT THE WORLD!

    I want the whole world!...

Anyways, got this gem in my inbox.

    "Hi Seraph,

I love your portfolio, just wanted to talk with you about making a site for a custom script. Basically, I want a site on the scale of <Biggest Site I've Made to Date> and even better looking, more detailed and shiny. Now, I would like for you to send me a few mockups of different themes you have in mind, nice detailed mockups too. And send me each one in multiple colors so I can decide which one I like. If I like them, I'll hire you in a month or two to make the site.

    Thanks!"

How many ways can I crush her spirit and say "Ain't Happening!"

Guess this silly person missed the whole point of the portfolio they reviewed.

So basically this person is saying, "Do a ton of work for me right now, and I might possibly hire you somewhere down the line in the mid-to-distant future?"

Pretty funny. I'm curious how you actually respond to this one.

Ugh. I know what that's like. I've had more than one person want me to build models for them. Usually they say "forget it," when I point out that they're not only on the hook for the kit, but for the materials, and occasionally some of the reference materials I use. Seems they don't like paying $7 a can for Tamiya spray lacquers

We had a customer like that at the newspaper. Wanted our Marketing Services Dept. to do 9 new speculative layouts EVERY WEEK, from which he would choose ONE AD to run that weekend. If he liked one! And the rejects stayed rejected...we couldn't send them again another week, they had to be brand new layouts every week.

The Marketing Services manager eventually put a stop to that!

Yep, taken from her email, LOL! My husband was cracking up too when he read it.

Yep! I just responded that I would not do that much work for her without receiving a deposit, and that if she wanted so many mockups, I charged $35/hr for those.

She hasn't emailed me back yet.

                            Quelle surprise......

I wonder if it's a case of truly not understanding just how much work is involved?
Or is it (as I suspect) a belief that you are so desperate to win their custom that you will agree to any demand, however outrageous?

No, it's definitely a case of not understanding how much work is involved. People think websites are just some code on a page that anyone can write; they don't understand that really good websites require designers and developers (both) with skill enough to make the code portable, the site navigable, and the execution future-proof.

Such that it is with most computer-things.
