  • In Which I Am A Lady of Leisure

Brief but extremely funny suckage this afternoon.

The customer is telling me he cannot pay his bills and allowances should be made.
He is becoming irate, paranoid, and illogical.

customer ".....and I bet you've never been short of money so you can't understand what it's like.I work hard all week and I have very little money at the end of the week to show for it"
    me "yes, I do understand"
customer "how can you understand? I bet you don't even have to work for a living"

me *Yep, I work in a call centre as a hobby, loads of people do, we've even got a little club online....*.

Customer "why did you answer the phone if you can't help me?"

I've had similar things happen too. I could be working harder than all my coworkers and still hear "How come you're just standing around? Aren't you meant to be working?" at least twice.
My answer: "I'm doing twice as much as anyone else. I'm just sooo much better that it looks like I do nothing"

I used to get a similar attitude from people when I was in the military. Yes, I got paid the same whether I was at work, at a doctor's appointment, or at a squadron picnic. Sometimes my boss would even send me home because we were all caught up with our work. What they usually forgot was that I was also paid the same when I was working 12-16 hour shifts for weeks on end with one day off every 10 days or so only to go do it again, when I was made to work overnight or over holidays, or when I'm sent away from home for months to years at a time for wartime deployments. No overtime, no holiday pay, no holiday bonuses, no incentive pay raises.

I wouldn't have traded the experience for anything in the world, but the periods of calm and light work were regularly interspersed with periods of serious tension, long hours, and hard labor. So don't tell me my military job was "easy work".

I think that a lot of people forget about this aspect with salaried employees in general. Sure, if they go home sick or whatnot, they get paid the same as if they were there the entire time. But they also never get overtime or holiday pay. I'm betting that most people would trade to get paid the same while working only half as much, but then bitch and complain when the other cheek was turned and they still got paid the same when they were working 60 hours a week. There are pros and cons to everything, but sadly too many only think of the pros and whine when the cons show their slimy heads.

Since when? When I was salaried, I got docked pay if I was there less than 8. I have the shittiest employers.

I stand corrected. And yeah, I think I would agree with you I've never heard of that with salaried people before.

That depends, I do believe some states still require holiday pay to be paid (whether that is done at the time of the holiday or just included in the annual salary is still left up to the employer though I believe)
I could be mistaken though, but I've known salaried employees who got holiday pay... that may have just been a company thing.

We had an ASM get mromoted at my old GameStore who absolutely threw a hissyfit when she discovered that they expected her to work FIFTY HOURS A WEEK as the new SM on salary >_> I always figured that 50 would be the low end for any well-salaried position...

I have. I *think* I could see that as being logical if they were there all week (meaning, not out sick/holiday/anything else) and somehow had less than 40 hours, but docking for just a few hours of one day seems harsh if they ended up working 50+ for the week
