  • Dear Parents....

I understand that accidents happen with very small children. I do. I have a brother 10 years younger than me so I've seen what can happen.

But for the love of God, if your child pees their pants in between two of my BTS shippers, leaving a considerable puddle of urine, TELL US!!!!!! No, I'm not going to be happy about it, but at least if you have the courtesy to tell me this, instead of letting it be a nasty surprise, I won't be silently cursing you for all eternity.

And what's worse, the child & parent I think was responsible walked right by me while I was cleaning up the mess without even looking at me.

Oh I think I have you beat.. one time the kid of another manager of another store got sick right on the copy center faux wood floor! Thankfully the manager who was with the kid went straight to our back, grabbed the mop, filled it with water and disinfectant and cleaned up the mop. He also then emptied out the bucket and disinfected that as well.

Depends. At least with Vomit, you are pretty sure most of the time what you are dealing with..and can handle it accordingly.

With urine, not always the case. Bodily fluids =/= water, and should be handled much much differently.

Now..just wait till you have somebody coming up to you telling you that there is a ketchup spill in the cafeteria of the store. Yeah it wasn't ketchup, but I could see thinking it was, because I sure the heck didn't have a clue as I was cleaning it up until somebody (the person who was bleeding who came out of the bathroom) let me know....

You should always be very careful cleaning urine. A lot of chemicals react to it and the net result is ammonia, a chemical that we all know is really quite unpleasant. Hospitals have two sets of cleaning and spills kit - for urine and non urine related mess.
A PSA, if I may, as well as another.

Where I work, Janitorial doesn't clean up any bodily fluid messes with the exception of bathrooms), it's the job of Loss Prevention associates. Has something todo with them being trained to clean messes like that due to 'Fluid born pathogens' especially if it is blood.

I never even thought of that.

Guess I didn't realize the ammonia concentration in urine could be such as to cause a reaction.

            Good to know.

I knew urine had reactive properties, but I didn't know their full extent. Maybe I'm best off just mopping with clean water. That way, come urine, bleach, or anything else, I can clean it without fear?

Oh yeah. Urine mixed with Chlorine Bleach based disinfectants is a very nasty thing.

Household bleach has a chemical formula of NaOCl - that is, one atom each of sodium, oxygen, and chlorine. Ammonia (which is what urine breaks down into very quickly) has a chemical formula of NH3, that is, one atom of nitrogen and three atoms of hydrogen. When these two compounds are combined, the following reaction takes place:

                2(parts)NaOCl + 2NH3 --> 2NaONH3 + Cl2.

That little Cl2 on the right hand side there? This means one part chlorine gas, made up of diatomic (two atom) molecules has been liberated from the bleach.

Which is not a good thing to be breathing in.

The best way to clean up urine is to use soap and water to get up the majority of the urine, dry the area, and then whack it with Lysol to kill off any germs and viruses that may be there.

That way you're not having to worry about the Chlorine.

See if you can get hold of some absorbant spill granuals, that way the liquid is off the floor before you start to mop

That works quite well also. Failing that, and decent clumping kitty litter works well as well. Just dump enough on the site so you can sweep the damp litter into a dust pan and dispose of it properly.

Then you can soap and water the area and follow it up with the Lysol. I'm quite partial to Lysol. Anything that can in a 3% concentration kill even the most nasty hemorrhagic fevers is more than effective for most anything found in the states.
