  • What do you have to do to get banned?

I don't think I posted this but a while back one of my CW's got into a big argument with a customer as he was adamant that she had short changed him by a pound while she insisted that she never. He then started to get personally abusive towards her (this CW does have weight issues) and threatened to get his mother to beat her up which obviously upset her. Then, as he walked back to the door, he turned around and threw a coin at her head so hard it knocked over several cans of deodorant that were on the shelf behind her. She was so shaken that she signed off from work for the following few weeks.

The police were called but of course he wasn't banned. A couple of weeks ago when I was on paternity leave he then got into another argument with the same CW. This time after he went outside he pointed his hand at her as if he was firing a gun and told the head of security that he was going to torch the place. The police have been called again but he still hasn't been banned.

Our Store Manager never used to be afraid of banning anyone but at the start of the year we had major roadworks which lasted around 5 months and cost us a fortune and since then he won't ban anyone. obviously trying to catch up on profits is more important than employee safety.

time for a report to the labor board and the police; if he won't call them in, make the call. this idiot has issues that go beyond anger and could become truly dangerous. if your manager isn't smart enough to see what's going on, he needs to step down and let someone else take over.
    look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

That's really sad. At my Mall we have had to ban people for the dumbest things; but since their actions could lead to someone getting hurt, and that type of person is not the type we want in our mall, it doesn't hurt us to do it. And we get tons of kudos from people for making their shopping experience safe!

Of course, the obvious question is, with this dangerous crazy around making threats that would get him kicked out of an airport in 2 seconds flat, how's that going to improve business?

Well, the SM doesn't have to deal with people like this directly, so it's obvious that he could not care less >_<

Seconded on Labor Board or equivalent agency in the UK: Hostile Workplace Environment would be the term that you are looking for, I believe. If anything, the SM is *encouraging* the SC's behavior.

I feel your pain. I worked at a mom and pop type gas station, and they were so money hungry and dedicated to SCs and their idiot behavior that it was very hard, if not impossible, to ban people.

Corporate mindless set of late. They don't recognize anything besides money anymore, such as threats to their employees.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

Well, if you ban the SC you can't get his money and customers are hard to replace, and employees are lining up for jobs, and they don't want the SC creating bad PR by bitching to everyone he got banned. (of course I wonder how bad said negative PR would be when your coworker goes to local labor board and media about how hostile of a work environment your SM is promoting. even if SC doesn't come back and do something worse that in itself gains media attention)
I'm sorry reading is not a new concept it has been widely taught in our nation for at least the past 100 years. Please, learn to do it CORRECTLY before you become contagious.

Worse than PR, what happens when the SC makes good on his threats and you have a negligence lawsuit filed against you (since knowingly allowing someone who has threatened harm to an employee to enter is not showing due diligence and wouldn't take too much lawyering skill to convince a jury). Not only that, but I'd love to see the manager explain to the insurance company that they knew the guy was going to try to torch the building and did nothing to stop him.
I know corporations are cold uncaring entities that care about nothing but money, but this is something that could cost them a shitload of money if it goes bad. Personally, I'd much rather risk some bad PR from banning a guy than risk lawsuits and potentially denied insurance claims.

Gee, that doesn't sound like making terroristic threats (or whatever they call it in the UK) at all.

No such thing in UK law...

It could fall under the Public Order Act, but proving it would be interesting.

Your manager belongs in the "Morons In Management" section. I would complain to a higher up if you can. If you feel uncomfortable at this job, I'd start searching for another one, because it sounds like a dangerous place to work with this crazy idiot going around and making threats and management not doing anything about it. Your safety is more important than making a few bucks, so I'd wait til I have another job lined up and then quit. I have a strong feeling that someone is going to get hurt.

Not that I'm not upset about the stupidity of this, but everyone else has ranted on that, and no one has said for this yet.

I normally don't suggest passing SC's off onto other customer service employees, but perhaps, buy him a plane ticket for a flight that inherently involves difficulties at the airport, and/or at a time that the airport is known to be chaotic?

I've posted about him in MIM before, as this was the SM who after a store cleaner had dropped dead in the store cafe, his only thought was the sooner the body was shifted the sooner the cafe could open, until the police turned up and ordered him to close it. He has been willing to ban people in the past (but mainly only for stealing) and as I have put on a previous thread, it seems like if you kick up enough fuss about it he will forget all about it and unban you.
