  • What's $9.99 Minus 9.99?/Rewarding The Banshee

    Apparently a free coffee.

Woman came to my register early this morning and I accidently rang in 2 of our on sale coffees but quickly voided out the extra. An hour or so later she calls back and asks to speak to a manager. An hour or so later she comes to me.

"Oh good, I just spoke to your manager and I got charged twice for coffee. I can go get the coffee I was charged for, yes?"

I look at her receipt. At Aid of Rite when we ring in items and void them off it will look something like this.

    Brand Name Coffee 9.99
    -Brand Name Coffee -9.99

Most people get in in about a minute or so when I carefully explain, but she didn't get it.

    "I was charged twice."

    "$9.99 minus 9.99 is zero."

    "I was charged twice."

    "What's 9.99 takeaway 9.99?"

    "Zero."

"There you go. That's the way it shows on your receipt. You weren't charged twice."

    "Ok thank you."

    Rewarding The Banshee

For the love of FUCK. You do NOT let your child carry around toy cars and then scream at him to shut up when you take them away. I heard the kid loud and clear from the back of the store, with blood curdling wails of pure unadulterated PAIN like he was being killed or tortured.

What does Grandpa do? Turns around and buys the cars for grandson, who jumps up and down with glee when he realizes he's getting the cars.

    Bonus: Nail Fungus

Woman calls in and keeps me on the phone for 10 minutes blah blah blahing about her father having a fungal nail but he doesn't want to go to the doctor and I need to help her find something but not too expensive and blah blah blah. Not that she was annoying, but it was just "Oh wait one more question!" and I want to get off the phone and help the huge line of customers we've got.

At the hardware store, I hated the void on the same receipt the product was double/mis-rung on, thing.

Pretty much the same as your store , where at a very quick glance it may look like it was rung twice, even with the (-) sign, and the voided ring being in red.

The other thing was, is the SKU number would print along the left edge of the receiipt, above the item it belonged to. So, on receipts for purchases of two or more items, the SKU for item"B" would line up with the price for item "A". Prices were, of course, printed along the right edge.

So, occasionally I'd get the customer that would say "Hey! You charged me $19.99 for my pack of gum!"

I would then explain that, the $19.99 was for the set of drill bits they'd bought, and show them how things lined up on the receipt. Like in your case, most would get it after a quick explanation, but once in awhile.......

      Ohhh brother...
The way our store does it, when it has multi buy promotions on, is to show the individual discount on each item, not the total saved for each buy. For example, at the moment we're selling branded cans of soft drink at 29p each or 4 for 98p. But of course you can't divide 18p evenly between 4, so the receipt will show:
      2 *drink* @ £0.25p
      - £0.08p
      2 *drink* @ £0.24p
      - £0.10p

That's just a very simple example, but lordy the problems I've had with people who can't do maths and come back insisting they've somehow been cheated. One woman in particular made me get out a calculator and check all the receipt in front of her. Needless to say it all worked out correctly, whereupon she glared at me, said 'Well it's not the way I do it!' and stalked off.
