  • The Determined Dumbass Countdown....

AKA - Some people never learn

AKA - Quarters for a meter would have been cheaper

AKA - I'll beat the system yet!

Whatever the title, the countdown goes like this....

T minus 4 weeks ago, we towed a young lady out of a parking lot for not having a permit for use of that lot.

T minus 3 weeks ago, we towed the same lady out because she did go back and buy a parking permit, but then attempted to change the expiration date of the permit and get herself 3 extra weeks of parking, the forgery was obvious.

T minus 2 weeks ago, said lady started using the visitor spaces in said lot, that are posted as ONLY usable for 2 hour stretches, she promptly violates the 2 hr limit, and a tow truck is sent to get the car, but she manages to see us coming and take off before we could get her hooked. She calls the apartment office to complain, only to be told said office is the one who CALLED us because they know what she's doing, what she's already done (forged one of thier permits) and this is the last straw, they don't ever want to see her car on their property ever again.

T minus 3 days ago, I notice her car now sitting out in the street in front of the apartment complex, where several signs indicate parking is NOT allowed.

T minus 2 days ago, I notice her car sitting out in the street, starting to collect parking tickets

T minus yesterday, I see her car sitting out in the street, booted

T minus a couple hours ago, I see her car sitting out in the street, with the boot now having been sawed almost in half with a hacksaw blade, behind said car is a cop car, with her in the backseat, cuffed, and now facing one charge of wanton destruction of city property in the amount of a $350 wheel boot.

And the countdown to ruining your life over a desire for free parking is now complete.....
    - They say nothing good happens at 2AM, they're right, I happen at 2AM.

If she has so much money to burn on being towed/tow storage/tickets why not just buy another damn parking permit?

call me crazy, but what would this achieve exactly?

was it an attempt to take off her licence plate?

The sound you are now hearing, is the sound of me laughing manically at the lack of thought behind these actions.

            Thank you.

Whiskey my love.... have you forgotten where you are? This realm we exist in is not unlike the Twilight Zone... the only difference is that The Twilight Zone kind of makes sense....

There's a peculiar brand of insanity that accompanies parking... like road rage, but less rage and more a complete failure of reason.

It's the kind of crazy that has you digging through a huge jar of pennies for just one last quarter, getting yourself filthy, and taking more time than it would take to just take 25 pennies to the corner store and get a quarter. (Read: Customers demanding to drive through a parking lot with a sign that says 'Full', convinced they'll be able to find something)

Or that duration of a theft somehow negates the crime ("I'll only be a minute!" or "I was only parked here a couple of hours! Why did i get a ticket!?")

The closest I've seen in kindergarden playground logic, complete with tattletales being bad ("How could you call them to tell them I was illegally parked!? Who cares if it was your spot, park somewhere else!!"), consequences being 'unfair', and adults (Namely, those who enforce the parking) being 'doody heads'.

Some people with gladly pay $150 to 'beat the system' and get out of a $100 fee. IIRC the medical term for this psychological condition is "stupidity."

Bonus anecdote: Successfully beating the system (Kinda)

About 10 years ago, in my hometown, downtown metered parking would cost you about 8 bucks for the whole day, and you'd have to go out and feed the meter every 2 hours. On the other hand, not paying would result in a parking ticket, the fine for which was capped at $5. Also, there was only about a 40% chance you'd actually get a ticket at all. Just about everyone who worked downtown just parked at a meter, never fed it a coin, paid their average of 2 $5 tickets each week, and got $40 worth of parking for 10 bucks.

I've seen Letters to the Editor in which people bitch about 'having trouble finding a place to park' for certain downtown events (translation: they got there late, all the closest spots were full and they didn't want to walk from a more distant parking lot)...they freely admit parking right under a No Parking sign or something equally stupid, then gripe and whine when they get a ticket.

Best part: it's mostly theater attendees who do this, and there is a light-rail train stop right in front of the theater. They could drive to a park-and-ride lot, park the car (for free) and take the train downtown ($1.75 each way). But no, they'd rather drive downtown which is always a bitch with the one-way streets and expensive parking...find a spot in an alley blocking a fire exit at a bar or in some other spot that is clearly posted "No Parking"...and then complain that the city should do more to encourage people to come downtown.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.
