  • "My girl is a good girl"- library woes

Since I understand Spanish and speak it a little I get the wonderful Spanish callers/customers. I used to get paid for speaking Spanish ($32 extra a paycheck) but then the city decided not all Spanish speakers should get bilingual pay. So I get nothing. But people expect me to translate anyway.

A woman calls our reference line, and my cw connects her to me.

The woman has a complaint about a librarian. This involves a mini-library (public space is about 600sq ft) in a community center.

Woman says she has kids, her daughter is a good daughter, who isn’t in a gang. The librarian was una morena whose name is Julie Faba (I changed the name). The librarian was rude to her daughter. Her kids come to the library during the summer so they can use the library. Her daughter is a good girl. The librarian told her daughter not to bring food into the library one day she brought food to the library (I’m not sure if it was a different day the girl brought the food). The day of the complaint, (yesterday) the girl was in the community center where there was some program with food. The girl got a bag of chips. Then she went into the library to check if her computer reservation came up. The librarian then banned the girl for a week because she brought the bag of chips (after being told not to bring in food again). But the girl is a good girl, she was just checking if her computer was available, it’s not fair that the girl didn’t do anything and she gets banned. School is going to start soon, and what is her daughter going to do, if she can’t go to the library before school starts? The daughter is a good girl. It is not fair. The librarian kept on saying “my library, my library.” It seems that the mom is at least with the kids-maybe not, maybe the mom drops them off and found out about the ban until she came to pick them up.

So, in short, the good girl is told not to bring food into the library. The good girl brings food again into the library, but she shouldn’t have that held against her because she was just checking if her computer was available. Because there is some magic that keeps food from being spilt or stinking up the place if you just are checking if your computer is available [/sarcasm].

Thing is, I’m writing this up so it will be sent to the co-ordinator in charge of these mini-libraries. So translating “morena” might be a problem since it means one thing in the Spanish I know, but I didn’t ask if she meant something else. it might matter when the co-ordinator tries to figure out who is the librarian, if the discription doesn't meet the name.

Well, maybe she's a good girl and maybe she isn't, but if she was told not to bring food into the library and did it anyway, she deserves to be banned for at least some period of time. A week sounds good to me. I also don't think being banned from the library a week is going to ruin the girl's life, but...

Are you kidding? She can't get onto Facebook and update her status while eating her chips! This is a national crisis! Bring out the National Guard!

All of the uses of "morena" that I know simply mean "brunette", or "tanned" (usually with dark hair). It comes across the same in both Spanish and Italian. It's not meant as an insult... at least not in any of the formal uses I've heard (songs, poems, literature). One of my favorite Josh Groban songs is "Mi Morena". I love languages, so I'm curious, is there a slang use I'm just not familiar with?

"Una morena" = "a brunette" according to Google's translation software. It sounds like the caller was just trying to describe the librarian for you.

Morena, to mean, means dark/tan/caramel/etc-skinned hispanic woman. Though I've talked to people from other Latin American countries who use the word for people who are black. So their was this slight language barrier, which I should have breached by asking the woman what she meant by "morena".

"My daughter is a good girl-" is the prefix to "-when I'm looking". -.-
