  • Overestimating by a factor of 16

Sketchy-looking woman came into my lobby. She gave me the stink-eye as she waited in line, probably due to the fact that she had to wait in line. When it was her turn, she inquired about weekly rates.

    Me: For how many people?
SC: One or two. My boyfriend is coming up at some point, I just don't know when.
Me: Well, for two people, it would be $350 a week plus tax, which is...
SC: FORGET IT! There's like 80 other places cheaper than you ASSHOLES!

    Cue SC storming out.

Wow...what did I do to trigger that?

I decided to do a little research. I didn't even know our fair town was big enough to even have 80 hotels, let alone 80 that are cheaper than us. So, I went through the phone book and discovered:

Including us, there are 28 lodging facilities in this town. 2 of those are B&B's, 2 are uber-fancy-schmancy-spa/resort style places, and 1 is a super-duper-uber-eco-friendly-green resort.

I can count about five that are probably cheaper than us ("Hotel 4+2"). Of those, four of them I'd rather sleep in my car (though judging by her looks, she'd fit right in with their typical clientèle), and the fifth one probably wouldn't appreciate her paying for one or two people and then have five people in the room. (She had a car full of buddies.)

So, five places...yeah, that falls pretty short of her estimate of 80.

I conclude we are not, in fact, assholes, and that our rooms are priced appropriately based on the local market. (Recent occupancy figures support my conclusion!)

350/wk is 50/night. Hotel 4+2 off the freeway here is 50/night. If you get any cheaper than that you're paying by the hour.

Why oh why did you make me think of this exchange from a cartoon I once watched before I was even able to work.

Desk Clerk:You want room for how long?
Customer (I think he was some kind of beaver): The night, please
Desk clerk: The whole night? *whistles*
Customer's friend (some kind of bull who was raised by wolves):Sheila?

that being said, I don't think I've ever seen an hourly motel, then again it could be something we just don't have in Washington.

That sounds like Rocko's Modern Life. The main character was a wallaby, and his best friend, Heffer, was a cow raised by wolves.

Sorry about that, keep on forgetting it was Grandpa Wolf's schtick to call Rocko a beaver, and I remember something about Heffer being a steer... and didn't honestly get the joke until long after I should have enjoyed the show.
