Long post
New student orientation
Parking permits were mailed to students attending today's new student orientation stating exactly which student lot to park at. The permit is free. You do not have to pay for it. There is a shuttle bus that takes you from that lot to the main building, & this information is stated on the permit. There is a detailed color map on the universitie's website that I printed several times in color for the customer's to use since they could not park in Visitor parking because it was reserved for 2 entirely different events. I circled the parking lot where the students had to park at, & I highlighted how to get to that lot. Most of the new students were happy with getting a map except for one parent.
Here is what happened.
She arrives with her son sitting in the passenger side. She tells me her son is here for new student orientation, & she shows me the parking permit. I let her know that she cannot park in Visitor parking because it is closed for 2 entirely different events. I give her the detailed color map. She looks at it, & asks me "so how do I get there?" I give her detailed instructions, & I tell her the route is highlighted on the map. She looks at the map again, & repeats herself. I give her detailed instructions. She looks at the map again & says "I cannot see without my glasses." Well...put them on. So she does that, & looks at the map again.
She then asked me where new student orientation is. I told her "1) it is in the main building, 2) but I cannot let you park in Visitor parking since it is closed for 2 entirely different events, & so 3) that is the reason I gave you a map & highlighted the route & circled the lot where you park at." This is her response..
I had to repeat my self. Then I raised the gate for her to exit the lot, but she does not do that. Instead she parks next to the faculty/staff garage & looks at the map for a while. Then she walks up to the booth window & says..
I do not know where this lot is
They did not tell me I could not park in Visitor parking *whoever they is*
how do I get there
I give her directions again, & I told her about the shuttle bus which is mentioned on the parking permit itself.
She then said "but I will be late to new student orientation if I park at that lot."
I repeat what I told her earlier about not being able to let her park.
I give her directions again. She leaves.
But she returns several minutes later & says
I cannot find that lot
Traffic is busy
I'm sorry but you should have written down the directions
This map is confusing
I give her directions again, & I repeat what I told her earlier about not being able to let her park.
She leaves.
Her son said nothing during the entire ordeal. He looked out the window.
Luncheon that was held at the main building
According to the Outlook calendar, the guests here for the luncheon had to park at the parking garage next to the College of Business since Visitor parking was already reserved for 2 other events. There was a key code given to the dept. having the luncheon for the guests to use to park at that garage. The key code was indicated on the calendar entry.
I do not know if the dept. having the luncheon gave their guests directions to the lot as well as the key code because everyone attending that event drove up to the Visitor parking booth. When I told them what was stated on the Outlook calendar regarding parking arrangements, many looked surprised. One guy looked irritated when I told him where he had to park.
The parking office printed some maps for an event that was held at the university a couple of week ago. If more than 50 guests arrived for the event, I was to tell the guest to park at the College of Business. Someone from the parking office highlighted the route from Visitor Parking to that building. Since less than 50 guests arrived for that event, I kept the maps inside the booth. I wrote down the access code on each map.
Some people needed detailed directions on how to get to that garage.
One guest told me she could not walk too far. Since I did not want to make things harder for me or for her (I had already dealt with the new student orientation parent), I let her park in Visitor parking.
One guy got lost, & he told me he would rather park in Visitor parking. He was frustrated when he returned to the booth.
One guy I gave the map to after telling him 1) exactly where to park at, 2) to follow the highlighted route, & 3) how to get there drove up the the Visitor parking garage entrance gate, pressed the call box, the phone inside the booth rang, I answered it, & he said he was here for the luncheon. I had to tell him "no, you park at the other garage. The map you have shows you how to get there." He backed up & left.
I was glad when my shift was over.

- this is rediculous
- I cannot believe this
