  • Ah, the irony

So I'm finally making decent progress on the costume I'm making for Mr Communication. I figured I might as well make him happy and send him several e-mails with progress shots, since that's what he seemed to want.

He hasn't replied to any of them.

Well, you could proceed on the assumption that if something were wrong he would tell you, so no communication is good communication, but YOU'D BE WRONG!!11!!1!!

So, bets on whether or not he'll try to get a discount because you did something wrong?

Personally, I'd send an email stating that you've sent progress shots and until you hear from him saying whether he likes what he sees, all work on his costume stops.

But that's me. I'm evil like that.

Not really that evil actually, it's just business. There's really no gracious way of telling people they have to get off their duff and answer your questions before you start working on ANY of their order. At my job, many well-meaning customers expect us to simply know what they want. These are not the a-typical EW SCs of lore. These are simply people who think my email stating "URGENT-Please Confirm!" is simply a suggestion. Sometimes the only way to force your hand is to make it completely clear that absolutely no work will be done and that date X will not be met unless a response is received immediately.

I still like your brand of evil, though.
A lion however, will only devour your corpse, whereas an SC is not sated until they have destroyed your soul. (Quote per infinitemonkies)

Well, the first e-mail I sent didn't actually require any response. The second does have a rather vital question in it though. I'm still waiting... if he doesn't reply soon then yeah, I'm going to have to send a follow up making it crystal clear that nothing is going to happen until my question gets answered.

Request Read Receipt. Request Receive Receipt.

If your email program/server supports them, then try to use them. Gives notification when the message is opened for the first time.

Of course, it tends to work better on private (company) email servers than the "wild" of the Internet (not sure where it's place is in the book of standards)... but many servers still support it.

Especially since, in the "wild", you have no way of knowing what e-mail client the person on the other end was using. Many times, I've had the temptation to look for an e-mail client available in source form and alter it to be a "rogue" - when a "receipt requested" e-mail is opened, pop up a message indicating that a receipt was requested (i.e. let the user know that someone is trying to find out if they've read a message), and give them the option whether to send the receipt or not. Wouldn't be surprised if such a program exists.

                        You call that "rogue"?

I call that Eudora. You mean there are mail clients that return the receipt without giving you any say in the matter?

I used to get that message from one friend when he sent things from work. They were never anything that needed a response (jokes and whatnot) so I assume it was just automatic for him.

Yes, as one might guess from my avatar, I sew things. Costumes specifically. More specifically mascots/fursuits and other fuzzy things. (I do plush and finger puppets and lots of random stuff as well. If you can make it from fake fur I've probably done something like it at some point.)

Given that when he was trying to threaten me because I was so "late" and wasn't "communicating" he always responded to me within an hour or two I don't think I need any special tricks to know he's gotten my message. I suppose it's dimly possible that after several dozen successful communications between us both of the last messages freakishly went astray, but I know what's much more likely, and that's that somebody who has proven to be a bad customer in the past is behaving badly once again.

It works better on the wilds of the internet, because of the following:

Gmail just automatically sends it. I was shocked to discover that it supported read receipts, because it never told me that one had been requested.
