Keep in mind, poor spelling isn't sure-fire proof of lack of education. I have a friend who has issues with spelling, yet is a wonderfully intelligent woman. She's a literature buff and is fond of quoting from books. She has a larger vocabulary than most of the folks I've worked with (including myself), yet she's poor on the spelling side.
That's me right there. I probably would have flunked college if not for spellcheck. Although, my spelling's gotten better the last few years. Mama Jedi's always thought I was a touch dyslexic since sometimes I have trouble distinguishing 9's from 6's and b's from p's and d's.

Definately "Keeping up appearances." It's always such fun to see Hyacinth getting her arrogance whacked by life's unco-operative craziness.
I haven't figured out why her husband hasn't throttled her yet. I know I want to.
I am no longer of capable of the emotion you humans call “compassion”. Though I can feign it in exchange for an hourly wage. (Gravekeeper)

They just have no idea how many of us are English majors. If they sat down and thought about it for two seconds, it might make sense to them. They'd think twice about criticizing, and come to us with questions about grammar, spelling, and Jane Austen.

I show people my business cards. They're shocked to know there's a failed novelist sweeping up after them.

Speaking of SCs with funny names: we currently have a La-a on property, yes you pronounce the "dash", good lord the woman is crazy (I bet it comes from having a mom who though "La-a" was a great name). Thankfully I have yet to actually deal with her.

We are required to spell back almost everything we enter when taking an order, even if SCs information is already in the database.

I can't adequately express how incredibly stupid this is, especially since The Outsourced have the English spelling and grammar skills of average first graders in inner-city US public schools. Geez, if I had $0.05 for every call I've taken to correct typos, I'd be independently wealthy.

Disclaimer: I am a USAnian who is far from grammatically perfect in the three foreign languages I know. I have done a lot of proofreading and editing (in English), so I am a stickler for spelling and grammar.

On the other hand, do try not to assume that everyone who spells even a simple name for you is trying to insult your intelligence. There are lots of reasons for it - perhaps they've had problems of people misunderstanding them (such as taking "Bea" for "Dee"),
I tend to do this for my surname, unless I spell it out they tend to slap a B in front of it

I have an unusually spelled name, and my last name is also unusual (it's actually harder than it was before I got married!), so I always say it, and if they look confused I spell it as well. I'm not rude though, I even have had trouble spelling it.
Hubby is dyslexic, and has a severe reading problem because his teacher made fun of him for not being able to read well in first grade, so he never learned how to read at a proper level. She also lied and said he could read fine, so it was third grade before anyone noticed he couldn't read. I think he's now at about a middle-school level, and he's 21. When people start to make fun of him for that, he gets really upset about it and depressed, even though it's not his fault. He's extremely intelligent, and will be able to figure out anything, he just has problems reading.

Jackdaw had to get skills assessments at the beginning and end of high school. (Needed evidence that he should keep getting extra help). His writing skills went up to a sixth grade level. I think that by now they might be up to a grade seven or eight. He can't spell to save his life.

He graduated on the Dean's Honour list, with distinction. He is currently in the middle of a PhD. So, there's for the educated side of things. I know I'm biased, but he's not one of those idiots who gets an education but still is dumb as a post.He is an avid reader, and probably does better with journal articles than the average academic does. One of his supervisors gets him to write introductions for journal articles (spellcheck is a wonderful thing).

Now, you were saying about people who can't spell?

Please forgive me, I certainly did not mean to anger anyone about the "poorly educated" remark. I know that there are many smart people who lack certain skills. I am only speaking from my own experiences, I have had several employees who lacked spelling skills and have known for a fact that they were just passed through the education system. I know of some excellent teachers who work hard at educating our youth and making sure they have the basic skills but I also know of several who just don't care anymore. My brother is an example of that lack of caring. He was labeled "retarded" back in the early 70's and was never given a chance to develop his skills. He was thirty when he moved to my city and has excelled since then because he was given a chance. My mom was never educated because she was also labeled "retarded" and at the age of 60 she was just learning how to read and write. She can read a bit now and can write more than her name. That is what I meant about poorly educated, some people are left high and dry because they were not given a chance and that is the case of "A". So I am sorry if I made anyone angry.

I just get ticked when people make fun of others for their lack of skills or look down their noses at those in the service industry because "only those with the least education work in food service". This has been the thought of society for a long time and it is wrong!!
